Attached are some photos of an old single shot target rifle I have.

Caliber 22, chambered for the Long Rifle cartridge.

I think it is based on the Martini action but may be wrong with that guess.

Anyone with any info, feel free to chime in, please!

Overall shot,

No sights and being of Germanic descent, unlikely to find a set that would fit.

I have used it with a scope, the rail was on it when I acquired it, and it is a nice shooting rifle.

A bit heavy to carry along for rabbit hunting but I don't use it for that.

Pics attached are of a "Zimmerstutzen"...., obviously of a different flavor, but in same overall theme.

The rear sight on the "Zimmer" pictured would be a good fit on what you've got there,.....the action looks like a short version of what your .22 LR is built on.

I think the front sight would fall into same baliwick,.....some were windage adjustable.

If you can find a copy of "Arms of The World 1911" you will find your rifle there marketed by Haenel ? sp That gun cost about $50 in 1911 and that was a bunch of money. Now check out Track of the Wolf as they use to sell Swiss Diopter sights that could be fitted to your rifle. You might also check out the ASSRA site as they have members selling that kind of stuff occasionally. Very nice rifle!

It is a nice rig, for sure.

Is the bottom rear of the forestock fitted to take a palmrest ?

While there are two holes drilled in the bottom of the forestock, possibly for a palmrest, I don't believe these are original to the rifle.

I do not think that is a Zimmer Schutzen . If I understand the description it is a full size .22 cal. schutzen. Thy were made in a lot of calibers I have some ranging from 8.15 mm to 11.2 mm.
If you look under the rear scope block you may find the makers name on the rib. As fore sights originals are hard to find. Re productions were available fore a while but are hard to find now. The sights are not very complicated to make . I have made a base and fitted a Hadly stile eye cup to it and it dose well.
The rifle you have is a high grade and rather valuable. Maybe not a good rabbit gun but I would wager it will hold the ten ring all day long if you do your part.

Several years ago I saw a very similar appearing rifle in a collection owned by a WWII veteran. The barrel was the half-octagon / half-round configuration, same as yours, also in 22 rimfire. There were no sights on the rifle. The owner was informed by his military superiors he could bring the rifle back from the conflict zone but could NOT bring the sights, thus they stayed behind. The rifled bore was only the same length as the octagonal section of the barrel. The forward (round) portion of the barrel was bored to about 28 gauge. Research determined this type of rifle was used for indoor "gallery" type entertainment and competition, as this was a commonly accepted gentlemen's activity. The owner was starting a search for replacement sights, both front and rear. What grand stories that rifle could have shared........

If you want to get the proper iron sights for it I'd suggest getting ahold of the gentlemen at the German Gun Collectors Assn and see what they say about it.

Wow, thank you all for posting as much info as you have.

I had no idea about the German gun website or that there was so much interest in these old Schuetzens.

I will be following up on the info more closely over the next week or two.

If anyone else knows anything, please let me know.

As I said, I have shot it with a scope, but I am not the best offhand shot.

Maybe it need a better shooter.

Thanks again.

Gents, thanks for sharing the pics of your fine single shot rifles. Now I have to wipe up the drool off the keyboard. Frank

Wake that rifle up, and shoot it!

Sorry about Bang / Flop on Zimmer versus Stutzen.....

Call that youthful enthusiasm.

The sights offered for $30.......If you're not interested, ...I sure am.
