RCBS 200gn .358 FN in 35 Remington

What is the proper C.O.L. length for this bullet (RCBS 200gn .358 FN when using for .35 Remington? I am wanting to load it in a case shortened from 1.92 down to 1.80 to comply with Indiana regulations. It appears at a C.O.L. length of 2.420 I am engaging the rifling with the bullet when chambering. My rifle is a Remington 760 Gamemaster.

If needed, would it be ok to mark the bullet and seat it just deep enough not to engage the rifling" It functions in the magazine at the current 2.420". I am assuming the C.O.L will stay the same for the standard case. Seating standard length brass to the top of the crimp groove gives me a C.O.L. of 2.415"

The "proper" COAL depends on your rifle. A little engraving is usually a good thing as long as it doesn't interfere with your fully closing the action. Once you find your "sweet spot" as far as accuracy then yes, the COAL would remain the same in either length case. I'm thinking since it's not a tube-fed rifle you may get best results with little or no crimp.

Seat to the same OAL you would for standard length brass. If you need to crimp pick the closest lube groove to crimp in.

I used hornady FTX last year out of my 35 rem 1.8" to take this deer.

This year I am working on a load for the 190 Ranchdog NOE clone in a 1.8" case. I'm using leverevolution powder.

When I shot the RCBS 35-200 out of my marlin it shot great seated to the crimp groove on standard brass and 40 grains of leverevolution powder.

Just crimp in the crimp groove with the shortened case. Not ideal but with that rifle it's probably needed. Then simply work up the load. I use the 35-200-FN in my 35 Rem (M91 rebarreled) over 37 gr H4895. I cast them soft and slightly HP with the Forster HP tool. Probably the "best" cast bullet deer cartridge I've used.

Our hoosier friends are very creative. When their DNR wrote up the laws, they limited the cartridge length to (originally to 1.6") to 1.8". No restriction on bottleneck cases. So, what they arrived to was shortening common cases to respect the law. As a result, a whole new family of wildcat cartridges were born.

As a former Hoosier who still occasionally hunts there, I'm curious. Have you consulted with the DNR about the legalities of this? I have read the regulations and have a 300 Blackout AR15 pistol now to be in compliance, but I am wondering what they have to say about ammunition modified to be in compliance being used in a firearm whose chamber was designed to be used with ammunition that is not compliant. Not saying you are wrong or evil in any way, just want to know. I was thinking about a .35 Rem rifle that would be easy to cast for, but didn't think it would be legal for IN.

The law just states min caliber and max length. It says nothing about standard, modified, or wildcats. It's legal.

I have asked several DNR officers and it is legal.Thats why I now hunt with a 358win 1.8".

Very cool! That's good to know because living in Kentucky now I have way more options, but I always like to know what those options are "back home in Indiana" Been thinking about a 35 cal, cast friendly rifle and hadn't decided btw 35 Rem and 358 Win. Is there any difference in how 35 Rem and 358 Win perform/function/load with the shorter necks. Aside from the obvious caveat of having exposed lube grooves with the cast boolits, that is. Pete
