Hope I don't get killed

I just ordered the Rossi 20" 357 M92 from Buds. I have the 45 colt but that eats 214 grains of lead and more powder, I want to shoot this a lot on the cheap. I have this pretty little 125 grain .358 boolit I cast and a mountain of 38 brass.

So, how do you think 4.5 grains of 231 would work? Any experience with that in a rifle. I guess it would be a cowboy load.

I was just shooting 3.8 of Clays and the 358 160 grain RNFP today.

Took it a while to get to 110 yards, but it was fun and relatively accurate.

Your 125 should save some lead.

Lyman's 4th Edition has 3.9 starting load to 4.8 max with 231 for a 125 gr. (5.2 +P)

After the years of 100 yard shooting, Tactical rifle and varmint rifle shooting, I'm finding my off hand abilities suffering. Too much time on a bench or bi pod. So now I wander around the range when I'm there alone and shoot paper plates at random ranges. Snap shooting close, take a little longer at farther ranges. All off hand.

I'll use the 45-70 scoped for a stand gun, but sometimes I get the need to put some miles under the boots. Usually I pack a pistol for that, but these pistol caliber rifles we are now allowed to use, perfect. Those 20" Rossi M92's carry very nicely. I won't carry the 357 for that,I have the 45 colt and some sweet 310 grain cast GC boolits that I imagine will put them down well out of the rifle, better than the pistol maybe, but even from the pistol they always go all the way through. The rifle is just faster to bring into play and more accurate.

Armednfree I call it "doing a walk through."

I will do a slow walk and shoot at small clumps of sod, cans, maybe throw out an apple or orange for a target, etc. (Of course always maintaining a good backstop and knowing where my boolits go)

Works great for lever actions and handguns!

armed, I find my skills go the same way. I tend to get concentrated on one style of shooting and then realize I let some other type atrophy. Offhand shooting is very perishable for me.

Sadly I have to relearn this lesson every so often. A few years ago I went to put down a very mangy coyote and yanked the offhand rifle shot horribly and the coyote got away unscathed. At the time I was doing mostly action pistol shooting. Back to the range!

My shotgun swing comes back with just a little effort thankfully. (less thought, more instinct use)

There was a time I could shoot off hand and hit stuff far away and quickly. I didn't even remember seeing the sights. That was long ago. I wonder how much boolit lube I'm going to have to use to get the heavy rust off those skills.

My 20" Rossi likes 5.3/231/Lee125 RF the best followed very very closely by the same bullet with 4.5/Bullseye for about 1220 FPS. BTW whatever setting throws 5.3/231 on your measure throws 4.5/BE. Here's 10 I shot off the bench last year.

I was thinking Trail Boss, 5.3 grains, anybody done that in a rifle?
