OK Ohio finaly is going to allow rifles using straight wall pistol cart.
LOL 45/70 , 45/90 ,50/70 , 444 Marlin and a bunch more
Just no bottle necks rounds
Along with the 357 mag and 44 mag

So it is well before season and I am already getting ask what factory round shoots well in the Marlin 45/70's
I have one , but it has never seen a round of factory ammo from me
So I have no clue what to tell them , as I will be shooting reloads with a cast Boolit

So those of you that shoot factory ammo in your rifles
What normaly groups well in your rifles ?

Yea LOL I know you need 4000 FPS and 5000 FPE to kill a 120 lb deer
And somehow my 357 Mag revolver kills deer

That is if they get off the couch , stop BS'ing and go hunting

Thanks
John

You're asking the wrong crowd about factory ammo. Just sayin.

My 1895 shoots my reloads using boolits shoot just fine.

If they will save the brass for you, just tell them anything besides hornady. If they won't save the brass steer them toward hornady. lol

When I first got a 45-70 I shot Winchester 300 grain HP ammo . Not Supreme but rather the plain old Super X . Now with that being said I shot it mostly to get a couple boxes of brass . But I can honestly say it was accurate in the Marlin 1895CB 45-70 I had at the time !

I have two .45-70s, and have been shooting the caliber for about 15 years now, and have yet to fire a factory round of .45-70. Would tell them to try different types and see what their specific rifle likes best, as each rifle is an individual so the only way to know is to test fire different loads. Just like us handloaders work up loads for accuracy instead of hoping that the first thing we try shoots well and continueing to use it even if the results are disappointing.

I have a Marlin 1895, and truthfully it shoots just about anything you feed it real good. These rifles are excellent shooters.

Unfortunately my 1895CB loves the Hornady Leverution....to bad the brass is short.

Send your short brass my way! I use it here in indiana for my 1.8" length case (max legal case length) hunting load.

I too have never shot a factory 45-70 load through my marlinCB. I have a box of leverevolution a friend gave me for Christmas...I just can't bring myself to shoot it. 45-70 is a cast for me!

I continue to be mystified on what some states regulate for legal rounds.

shoot factory ammo? Can my rifles can do that?
I have used the Win. 375gr factory ammo that come with my Marlin 45-70 when I got it
It did preform as well as any thing I have hand loaded .
As a component I have not been able to find it.
do to a 1973 Springfield also in 45/70 I also shoot most of my 45/70 is loaded with a 405gr. cast bullet but a 2 1/2inch group is about as good as it will produce, not a hunting round in my book.
if I was to use a factory round the Win, with a 375 gr bullet would take any thing walking the lower 48 states

1.8 inch brass ... for the Indiana crat's ... what is the old 45-60 case length [1.89 inch]? or even the 45-50 case[1.54 inch]?

I shot some of the Winchester 300 grain JHP in my Marlin 45-70. I never shot them to determine accuracy, but as I recall the bullets shot plenty accurate at 50 yards. That is as far as I shot them. The 300 grain Winchester averaged just over 1700 fps, and recoil was very manageable, not much different than a stout 44 magnum load. Most of the time I shoot reloads. A Lee 405 grain WW, 2500+ lube, 45 grains of H4895 for just under 1500 fps. I have loaded the same boolit all the way to 53 grains of H4895 for over 1800 fps, but the recoil is just fierce. And there is no need for that kind of hitting power for deer or hog (just over 3000 ft-lb!). But it's nice to know you can!

+1 on the WW 300 gr. Hollow points. A little over 1660fps out of my guide gun, accurate and very effective on deer.

My 1895 really likes 45 grains of IMR 4895 with a 300 grain boolit. I would estimate it gets 1550 fps or so. You can probably use less of a faster powder for the same result.

My guide gun shoots the Hornady Leverevolution well and it kills pigs. Just under 2000 fps

Marlin 1895CB chambered for 45-70

no problem with accuracy jumping over 0.3" before engaging the rifling.

I load the short Hornady brass with the RD 460-350 and 460-420 boolits and use the TL grooves to seat them long.

I've had pretty good luck with Federal Power-Shok 300 gr HP's.

BB, "factory ammo" is a myth that some jokers continue trying to convince some of us that it exists. It's kinda like a unicorn, or santa claus, or the easter bunny, or anything else that is composed mainly of unobtainium, like .22LRs around here these last couple years. Does that help any?

My 45-70 Marlin has only seen boolits for the past 20 years or so. My RCBS 405 Gr boolits (about 420 gr actually) and loads are what I'd use on anything found in the USA. Since dinosaurs are nowhere to be found I don't think I'd need anything hotter, and see no need for anything with a metal jacket on it. :lovebooli

I bought my 1895 with two boxes of Remington ammo back in the 70's. Never sat and shot that ammo for groups, but it was accurate enough to take two white tails (both at under 100 yards) with iron sights. I'm not really sure why I'm saving the other 38 rounds. It's only been fed lead boolits since then, and digests them quite well.

If I didn't cast I'd be hunting with RP 300 or 405 gr. Before I started casting I had excellent results with the RP 300, even shot a box of factory loads and my Guide Gun liked them.
