Crikey, what do you use for plant food. With a bit of coriander that would make a gallon of Soup. You must have some good Soil down there.I have distant memories of the hospitable Kiwis during the 50s.Merchant Navy, visited Aukland Wellington and New Plymouth.

Jeff,
Do you happen to live near any atomic research facilities, or had a meteor land near your garden?
Does your garden glow at night?
Have you ever read "James and the giant peach" by Roald Dahl? You might want to check that out for the kids.

Seeing your pics of giant rabbits (ok, hares) and carrots is humorous, in a way. NZ sounds like a neat place. Especially when you throw Red Deer into the mix.

WOW! Better keep your eyes peeled, ol' bugs will be out to get his winter supply of carrot---(no "S").

But you're NOT supposed to talk about gardening on this forum, somebody will declare war on you!:coffeecom

They make carrot oil. I'm sure that it would be great for an additive to Boolit lube! There now the conversation isn't about gardening.

Enough vegetable in one piece for a family of four or more... Impressive!

I'd be even more impressed except that for years my father owned a commercial greenhouse/florist shop and even today at age 90 he still gardens as best he can. Many of his friends are/were gardeners, and over the years I've seen more mutant vegetables than you can imagine. Tomatoes the size of small pumpkins, turnips and potatoes the size of cannon balls, gooseberries the size of ping pong balls, etc. And always the race to have the first tomato of the season.

I admire folks that can grow things. I can't, so it's a good thing I can run a milling machine.

Nice Jeff! Had some Royal Chantney carrot in dug in the spring through the snow, about half that size but still impressed the neighbors. Thanks for posting! Tim:D

What variety of carrot??

Wish I could remember. Must keep a gardening diary.

What I can confirm is where I planted I had dug a lot of sand into the soil and this created a light mix of media. Was drier too. And Frodo the cat sleeps in the carrot bed between the tops, out of the wind, in the shade. I think the big, fluffy fellow has incubated it!!!

Those other rabbits look to be larger than the buttstock of the rifle, quite impressive also. Now I'm hungry.

If it doesn't work out he could grind it up and use it for flux. ;-)

Nice looking carrot! Never seen one that big lol. I'm used to those little baby carrots I can buy at the market. 2" long lol.

Here in the USA we plant seeds and raise the crop.

Down UNDER they incubate and rear their crops while shaking them sometimes not so gently.

Must be something about the shaking we were never told about.:bigsmyl2:

Jeff,
Apparently New Zealand has all the monster carrots, and Ohio has the diminutive ones....
We just pulled out first carrot of the season, and here it is in all it's glory,

I knew NZ had extra large mallards but I had no clue about carrots. I vote it's either something in the water or the two islands are completely radioactive, maybe radioactive water. Might want to get yourself tested. In your picture are those rabbits or a true hare? I have seen jackrabbits before which are a hare but they were not near that size.

Take a look at this monster. I pulled it last night.112707

yup, just a hair under 2#.......
And I have no idea as to why the pic is sideways. Gravity must be out of order.

Right now I have 14 tomato plants, 30 green beans, 2 different stages of carrots, 3 different stages of lettuce, and lots of other stuff that is starting to fill the freezer. I have to say that next to casting and reloading, gardening is cheap therapy and very helpful to living a good life.
There is nothing like going out to the garden and picking your lettuce, a cucumber, a tomato (or a bunch of cherry tomatoes), some radishes, making a salad and topping it off with organic chicken. I could eat that meal all summer for lunch and dinner....wait....it IS what I eat every day for lunch and dinner!
Organic no less! Life is good.

Very nice, I think my first carrot pulled this year was maybe 2 inches long and a half inch diameter at best.
At least I've got a few of them, but may have to wait another month to pull them.
On the other hand, the various peppers are going better than I expected, particularly the Trinidad Scorpion peppers. Just waiting for the peppers and tomatoes to ripen so I can make some salsa. If I use those Scorpion peppers for the salsa, people will likely hallucinate after tasting it.

Only thing I seem to be able to grow well this year are weeds... and turnips that I hate(I grew them for the greens, anyone want turnips?)

That's why the garden is fenced in. I could (but won't) pop a deer with a 22 head shot from my barn all day long. The come around a try every way they can find to get into the garden. They have eaten the hosta and other ground cover outside the garden.
We have taken to peeing on the ground cover to keep them away. It seems to work! Kind of weird though, peeing in the back yard.....good thing we don't have close by neighbors.
