So, my wife threw me a surprise party for my 40th today. Lots of good food, family and friends wete there. The biggest surprise however was the 500 mag she gave me. She also had a couple of boxes of factory ammo (everybody wanted to try it out- wife too). She had located a die set, mag primers, 50 new brass, a box of jacketed boolits and a big box of ear plugs. Now the party I kinda suspected, but the 500 mag was not even on the radar screen - a true and thoughtful surprise. I love my wife........... Now for the eye candy.

That's a whole heap of shootin' iron. Of course you'll need a mould....or two....or three. ;-)

Haha, yes...I was just reading about the Lee 440 gr double cav mold. I was calculating how many boolits I could wring out of a pound of lead....15!!! Boy will it blow your hair back with that compensator :)

That short 500 is a whopper to shoot, I know ;)
So, How did it shoot ?
What did the other party goer's think ?

Haha, I just showed my wife the comments, she laughed out loud when she read the post from MagFan :)

JonB - I am no pistolero but I placed two full solo cups on a stump and paced off ten yards. Everyone got some earplugs and took a step back. My wife had gotten two boxes of factory ammo for me (all she could find from the several stores she looked at).

The first box was 20 rounds of MagTech marked - 325gr FMC-FLAT 2341ft/lbs and 1801 fps at muzzle
The second box was 12 rounds of CorBon Hunter - 440gr (cast/flat) 2580ft/lbs and 1625 fps at muzzle

So, with my first shot of the MagTech - the solo cup vaporized and so did the one beside it :) Same with the second and third shot. Several of the other men at the party stepped up and took a shot - three said they never needed to shoot it again :) My wife took a shot and liked it, then my mother in law wanted to shoot it but my father in law told her "Absolutely not, you will get hurt for sure".

Later after everyone else left, me and a couple buddies finished up the MagTechs - with me shattering a 3/8" thick commercial planer blade with one of the shots (lots of shrapnel). Then we loaded with the CorBon ammo. My buddy really rocked back as he shot the first round of it "Whoa, If those first loads kicked like a mule than this stuff kicks like two of em!". He also had noted something struck his cheek when he fired. We each only fired one round of the CorBon stuff - it was a lot harder kicking. I couldn't figure out why it had an extra compensator in the box. It was not until I read later that I read one was for jacketed and one was for cast. I suspect the wrong compensator was in for the hardcast Corbon load :( Anyway it was a big big hit.

Oh, and I did shoot a little from 20 paces with a tree brace and managed to hit a 6x6" target multiple times. Shot it straight through a 6x6" block of treated wood, and an old oak stump that was getting a little doughty on the edges that was about 20" thick. Each box of ammo was marked at $50 btw, a good candidate for casting/loading for it would seem.

Wow isn't it nice when your wife is so practical? That 500 S&W sure beats a new tie. My wife has surprised me before with something like that and it is really nice ever now and then.

The guy selling the raffle tickets for the friends of the nra, said he bought some brass and bullets for a 500 a week or so ago, and ask if I knew anybody that had a need for them. I don't have a clue what he wanted for them, as I wasn't personally interested in them, but I can find out if you want.

Happy birthday.

Just so you know there is no such thing as gently used 500 brass. If it was fired chances are it wasn't gentle, lol.

Great wife, gift, & birthday you had there.

My birthday was the 3'rd, and I got a 222 that I've been wanting. It was no surprize though, as I picked it up a week early.
