I've gotten the itch for a new 357 revolver and the thought of it has got me thinking.

I can reload 38/357 for the price of primers ($40/1000) and powder ($25/pound of 231) I have several thousand SPP and 2-1/2# 231 on hand right now. I've got several hundred pounds of smelted COWW ready to be turned into Boolits and about 1000-1500 NOE 358429 boolits already sized and lubed. I have 500-600 pieces of used 38 special brass and 500 brand spanking new starline nickle cases ready to be loaded. If I load at 3.5gr of 231 I can get roughly 2k plinking loads per pound of powder. So essentially $105/2K rounds loaded not including time spent. Thats $2.63 per 50 count box. Much cheaper than 22lr right now. Granted, this is IF I can keep in a steady supply of 231 and primers seem to be loosening up so not as worried with them.

For selling/trading fodder I have a sealed box of 5000 count Remington branded government overrun 22lr ammo. My total stockpile is roughly 11-12K right now. I was shooting more prior to the shortage, but have been shooting mostly my revolvers and cast. I will run through ammo in my Smith 15-22 (an AR style 22). Other than that, it will be hunting. I also have a good supply of shotgun ammo. May need to stock up on that now that it is still "cheap".

So I guess the question is, would you sell it; and if so, how much?

If you don't think you'll miss it, then I'd sell it. How much? I'd put it on Gunbroker and sell it for as much as the market can stand.

Sell it and convert the mulah into reloading stock.
If your usage is more to the reloaded ammo side of the equation, and you keep enough 22lr around to plink with, then it is a simple thing.

Keep it. Shoot more.

The plan is to sell it for $$$ to put towards a nice 38/357 revolver. Likely a GP100 4" stainless. It would keep me from coming "out of pocket" for a new (to me) gun. I have a 586, but it's pulling HD duty for my mother with no sign of it coming back anytime soon. I've got a 357 JM Marlin that now needs a companion. Also by casting lesser weighted 358 boolits as opposed to 220-250gr 41Mag boolits, I'd have more boolits per pound of alloy. I dont shoot my 22's that much. Not that I dont like too, but have been shooting more revolvers due to cost.

Break into individual bricks, list it on the auctions, and you may end up with enough to buy you a new revolver outright or come dang close.

I would not sell it based on liability issues these days. As Harry said, "A man has to know his limitations," and don't want to bet my home that I would never make a mistake.

For others, they have their own opinions

OK, so next question: How do you ship 22 ammo? Rules, regulations and expected cost? And if on gunbroker, what should I set as a "reasonable" reserve?

It's factory rimfire ammo. What liability will be incurred?

I honestly wouldn't set a reserve. I ignore all auctions with a reserve as they are a waste of everybody's time. I would start it low with a buy now that is near the top of the current market or an amount you are satisfied with. What happens is people will bid while it is low, and as it sneaks closer to the buy now somebody will freak out and hit the buy now. Ensure you list that shipping is to be paid by the buyer with a solid estimate on the shipping so an informed decision can be made.

Factory ammo is one thing, fine to sell. Selling your reloads requires a special FFL and I wouldn't give the ATF the reason to come looking, no matter what money could be made from the sale. Just selling cast boolits requires the same FFL. Selling off factory 22 rim fires, not a problem. Be careful with this one.

You are selling off the factory ammo and keeping the reloads to shoot in your new toy, right? Check Gunbroker and find out what ridiculous prices people are paying this week. Take the market for all it is worth; if people are dumb enough to pay Gunbroker prices, I need their money more than they do.

Sheeooot. If you were to list it at $50.00 per 500+ shipping you would probably have it all sold in under a week and be a long way towards your new heater.

With what you have said i would sell it and then replace it 50 rounds at a time from walmart or where ever at a normal price

I mite also try listing it here or another site NOT CRAIGSLIST as FTF first

Just for clarification: I am only considering selling a sealed, boxed case of 5000 surplus Remington branded 22lr ammo.

I was just doing the cost calculation on 38/357 ammo to justify, even if on my own head, that reloading ammo, for my own personal consumption, is cheaper than 22lr ammo at current market price and that I could turn something that is gathering dust, into a new 357mag wheelgun and be little, if no money out of pocket......and come out ahead since I will be able to reload on the cheap.

I would not use craigslist for something like this.

Start it at a penny and watch it GO!

I just checked, 5000 round lots of .22 on gunbroker right now are bid up to $450 with four days left. I checekd shipping costs on the first two, $30 and $45. You're going to make out like a bandit if you bought it at pre-panic prices.

You won't get a pristine S&W or anything like that for $450 but you'll make a sizable dent in your out-of-pocket. I would sell, happily.

Careful, the NSA watches this site......
They will turn you over to the Doe Run 22lr repository police.......
