View Full Version : Cut it down or trade it off

I have 97 Starline 454 casull cases, never fired. I've had these for some time, but I no longer have the gun. Some have the slight dark marks brass gets in long term storage, but none have been fired. I just opened the box today, found that it only had 97 cases in it, which means Midway shorted me.

Since I don't have a 454 anymore, but need 45 colt brass, I have to decide if I should trade them off or cut them down. I would not trade them 1 for 1, maybe for 130 new 45 colt cases. The question is, will a Rossi M92 reliably light a federal small rifle primer? The dent on a large rifle primer is pretty deep. And if I do cut it down, what would the capacity be in comparison to a 45 colt? I would only use these for the 310 grain GC boolits.

Due to the fact the 454 cases are marked as such, and the small primer pockets, I'd suggest a swap for your needs. Less confusion that way & lowers the chances of a mistake later on. And, if you ever get out of 45 Colt stuff, you wouldn't be stuck with them.
Offer a swap or outright sale & get the correct ones.
(I say all this because a guy I know many years ago loaded some heavy 357 loads in 38 spl cases & I saw him accidently put them in a S&W 38 spl. Can we say ruined a S&W?)

I'd swap or sell them, to much work to cut them down and specific brass is getting darn hard to find.

Use the cash to buy 45 Colt brass someone will be real glad you sold the 454 stuff

Yep, sell them or swap them. I have seen .45 Colt brass for sale 2 or 3 times within the last month on this forum.

Armednfree---You said " I would not trade them 1 for 1, maybe for 130 new 45 colt cases." This makes me curious, why not a straight across trade? I am assuming the 454 cases are worth more on the market than plain old 45 cases? But after you go to all the work of cutting them down, dealing with the then unknown interior capacity and the differing primers, you are (after all) simply left with 45 size cases with the wrong headstamp. Once you modify those cases any higher value goes out the window! Just curious is all. Have a great day!

I recall an article in a gun rag magazine that went on about trimming .454 brass down to .45 Colt length. The reasoning they gave was for a stronger made case so you can horse up the colts velocities.Robert

I was planning to use some 454 casings for my go to hunting loads, except for length they are the same as 45 colt. Just enough for hunting season. The reasoning being they would have the 454 markings and I could keep them seprated from my 45 colt pistol that I use for plinking. They could be shot in the revolver but I don't care for recoil but in the 92 Rossi with the 24" barrel the recoil isn't felt as much.

I wish I had some 45 colt cases to trade you, I could use some more 454.
