Don't know why I didn't think to post this sooner, but we have a moose here in Cedar County Iowa. It wondered in last winter and has been here about a month. A bull, he's lost his rack now. He was in the County town of Tipton yesterday. Kinda interesting when you get a call saying there's a moose in the back yard. We had and elk 10 or 15 years ago but it didn't stay around long. I been told that they get confused and just start walking. I really don't think anybody would shoot it, just hope it doesn't get hit on the road. I'll try to post some pics. We have one where he crosses HWY 30 with the Stanwood City limits sign in the back ground

My first job out of collage was working or an engineering firm and we designed and inspected the work on the waste water treatment facility in Tipton back in the late 80's and I spent months in Tipton Iowa nice place.

When the Moose start heading South, "Global warming" suddenly really does morph into "Climate change" LOL!!

I knew there had to be something behind me wandering aimlessly in the woods!

Yup ticks drive them crazy this time of year too. You can find blood in the snow where they rub trees till they are raw.

I wondered what happened to that moose. Cedar County has some large farms along the Cedar River that would be a good place for it to hide out without presssure from people. Sure hope it looks both ways before crossing the roads.

The problem with a moose in Iowa, is they will start eating corn. Moose can't digest corn. They can starve to death with a full belly.

I've a few "theories" like that or Chronic wasting disease or such...I understand they actually don't know anything for sure yet. They want do a study or they are doing a study...lots of tax dollars at work.

I wonder if this moose came through Glencoe :) ...on it's way to Iowa ?

I guess it like us having elk here in Kansas. For some reason we even have a huntable population though I have no clue why?

I was wondering how they would do on corn and soy beans

There's more than one moose in Iowa! I had coffee with one at a truck stop, and the pocket on her Levi's was as big as my head! :O

Back in the late 60's I had a 80 acre farm which was bordered on three sides by Backbone state park in NE Iowa. There was one family of bears in the park. The deer and raccoons ate 90 percent of my corn. But great eating.

Here in NH we have plenty of moose. We have highway signs that warn of moose in the roadway. You hit one of those big boys and the hood takes the legs out from under them and the body crashes through the windshield and kills you deader 'n Elvis.
There are usually a half dozen people killed in Me, NH and VT every year in car/moose collisions. We had one standing in our driveway last year. I almost hit one a year or so ago.
There is a moose hunting season here that is done by lottery. Pay the entry fee (I think it is like $50) and they draw for 50 or so licenses. There really isn't much sport in shooting a moose but there IS one heck of a lot of meat!

Chronic waste disease characteristics are weight loss, dead hair coat, eyes scissoring (Eyes looking in different directions), circling. In later stages the animal will go down, legs will be stiff and running in place, head arched back followed by death.
Lice can also drive animals crazy this time of year.
