And not what you might expect.

Every year at this time when I run the pine forest I think I really must take the camera. As luck would have it, yesterday I had my phone.

And after I sampled each here is the pink elephant that appeared in the water hole nearby. ;-)

Zoommb has an absolutely beautiful Autumn picture over on the Dan Wesson forums that is the epitome of the Fall season to me.

I'm hoping he wont mind if I borrow and re-paste it here.

I have been using it as my desktop wallpaper.

Can you eat those shrooms? Or will they kill you?

I wouldn't touch them. But they sure look pretty.

I had no idea you have that type of Amanita mushroom down there. We call that red one a fly amanita. It is toxic and hallucinogenic in small quantities. We have lots of them on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula as well in the fall. Do you have the edibles like chanterelles and boletes? Our climates are very similar.

Quilbilly, And that is why you all see bigfoot up there. Sampling all the shrooms. There are actually a lot of edible ones.

Still waiting for bigfoot but I have seen a couple UFO's. Our area is heaven for edible mushrooms (especially last fall). We were overwhelmed by chanterelles last October so we didn't even bother with the russulas and local small boletes. We even found a concentration of king boletes near our favorite huckleberry picking patches (we made a fine meal out of fresh grouse, king boletes, and huckleberry cobbler. Obama should eat so well).

Our morels are going to be popping in about a month. Can't wait. I just wish I knew someone with a little more knowledge when it comes to mushrooms. I find all kinds of different ones in the spring, but I am not brave enough to pick and eat them. Morels are easy.

Get a book, that is what I did.

The book "All The Rain Promises, and more…" by David Arora is an inexpensive pocket book with excellent pictures. It is mostly about the West Coast of the U.S. but many of the edibles are nationwide judging by what some of our board members have said over the last couple years. I usually tell newcomers to "shrooming" to just get to know a couple really well then branch out after a couple seasons.

Morels and the occasional puffball here. Bright colored mushrooms are usually a warned sign to not touch. Waiting for the first signs of spring here, I have a patch of daylilies that start to green up first and so far no green.

I was just thinking yesterday when we were going to see fall pictures of New Zealand. Its about that time.

Yesterday was a pretty decent day here. Woke up this morning to 3" of snow and its snowing harder all the time. We decided not to build fence today so I'm playing on this computer for a bit. Glad I filled the woodbox last night.

Here is a picture I took last fall. October if memory serves correctly.
It was adjacent to one of the last stands of old growth forest in Ohio.

And no, I would not nosh on those mushrooms, even as pretty as they are. I am not interested in trips without luggage!

Soon. I'm in denial. I'm not a fan of the colder months and darker days.
