I enjoyed casting my first ever bullets today. The bases are nicely filled out. I had good success by putting the mould in the melt for about five seconds on the mould bottom edge and the sprue plate, I don't have a hot plate yet. I also learned to get the mould top flat for the last of the pour to fill out the base. I'm pretty satisfied with my rookie session. Here are the ones that didn't go back into the pot: 100870

I cast my first bullets today, too. .38s from a Lyman 358477. I rejected the first 150 of them learning the process but I did end up with a bunch that should work. I think I'm hooked.

nice thing about casting is no one has to see your 'mistakes.' I prefer to call them learning casts but in any event there no need to throw them away just throw them back in the pot
.
very nice bullets, BTW

My second time casting, I produced 53 bullets and only 3 went back in the pot. I'm simply dipping with no accessories, no PID, no thermometer, and no hot plate. My thinking is the "Old dead guys" used campfire coals without an fancy equipment so I should do the best that I can with what I have like they did. The bullets weighed right at 535 grains, plus or minus .01 to .06 grains and size averaged .4595 casting at about 25:1 ratio. I'm going to experiment loading some "as cast" and some sized using my homemade Lee die at .4595. Even if the sizing die doesn't do much it will smooth up my lube job. My bullets are superior to the mail order ones I had previously been using and they were too pricy for what I was getting. See the photo:101276
