Went to the grand opening of our Cabelas and spotted this 1895 in 405 win on the used rack.
I had just read the book on Teddy Roosevelt going to Africa and using the 1895 in 405 and figured this would be a good rifle to start. I do have a Puma 92 in 45lc .

Looking the rifle over 3 different times they offered it to me for $599..
The rifle has been reworked and dating it shows it was made sometimes in 1906, serial is 55###.
It does have a Lyman number 56 peep sight on it.

I plan to use cast boolits in it after I shoot some factory loads to check it out.
Brass and bullets are on the way ,dies have already arrived.

I love the .405 win If you have any Rel 7 ,IMR 3031,or H4895 then you are in business.We are fortuinate that Hornady makes the brass. I use to have to form it out of B.E.L.L. basic. Slug the bore,you will probably be fine with a .413 sizer die.

I will need to slug it and then see which mold I can find.
Don't have those powders will need to do some looking.
What grain boolit are you shooting in yours?
One afternoon this week will need to slip off to the range.

I have the Lyman #412263 plain base and I also have two Hoch gas check moulds ,One is a copy of that Lyman bullet. The other is a 310 gr flat nose.

Congrats on an excellent deal and rifle.

I recently bought one of the new Teddy Rosevelt repros in 405 and really like it.
I don't have a mold for it yet so I've been loading factory cast boolits from Midway.
I tried the Hunter's Supply 315gn and they were terrible, giving around 8" patterns at 25yds.
They are a gascheck design but don't have the check on them.

I also tried the Cast Performance 265WLN GC. they are a little undersized at .410" but they shot great giving nice cloverleafs at 25yds with 20gns of 2400.

I found 5 boxes of factory Hornady 300gn psp. They shot nice tight groups about 1" higher than the 265s.
I used them on a Hog this past weekend and the penetration was terrible. It was a 165lb Boar, I shot it 3 times,not my best shooting :( , and none of them exited. One was a rakeing shot going away from me I tried to put it just behind the ribs towards the lungs on the off side, but the bullet stopped in the stomach after about 8" of penetration. The last shot was in the neck just behind the head, it hit the spine and blew up. Penetration was about 5-6".

We got the pig cleaned and in the cooler fairly fast. I cooked some of the back strap up last night, it tasted just like a pig, only just a little tougher.

I need to get a good boolit mold for mine.

I have been looking at this mold I like the
design
Don't plan on pushing them to fast so think I am going with plan base.
I shot a 325 hog 2 years ago with a 45/70, 325 grn lever revolution.
Hit him thru both lungs.He ran about 20 yards and ran straight into a large tree.
When he rolled over I hit him again between the front legs which anchored him, only hog I have ever shot.
Later when I recovered the skull found he had shattered the whole left side when he hit the tree.

Should I be able to pan lube the 405 with your 50/50 lube .I have 3 lbs on hand.
I plan to run about 1600 fps with a 288 grain bullet

Yes the 50-50 should do well for pan lubing and should handle 1600fps with a plain based bullet and up to around 2200 for gas checked.

I just bought that same rifle last week, can't wait to shoot it if this snow EVER melts (doubtfull....). The rifle itself is BEAUTIFUL. If the OP got an original 1895 that bad boy is worth some serious money.

Anyone know if a tang sight can be put on this rifle? I'm going to accurate right now.........................

Great, then it will be a good cast bullet shooter.I have seen some of the old guns with near mint bores.

Shot the Winchester 1895 today.
really like the way it shoots
Started with some of my reloads first.
42 grains of IMR 3031 behind a 300 grain Hornady jacketed bullet.
Only loaded 10 rounds to start.

They group about 3 inches at 50 yards, recoil was moderate.
Then moved to factory Hornady ,300 grain interlock bullet.
Recoil stepped up noticeably but not unmanageable .
Groups opened to about 4 inches still getting use to the rifle.

Did find out the Lyman 56 peep does not have enough adjustment to move the impact to the right enough.
The sight is maxed out to the right and the group is centered 1 inch left

Do they make a longer arm for the lyman 56 or suggestion on getting more adjustment for it.
Not really wanting to drift the front sight.

Time to get some cast bullets to run thru it and settle on which mold I want.
Only 4 1/2 months till deer season

I have an original 95 in 405 and reload for it using Lyman 412263 from an older Lyman mold which is single cavity. It casts at .413 which is the proper diameter. For a while I used brass made by fireforming 30-40 Krag cases but they were 1/4" too short; then Hornady started to make correct brass. You can load up to around 2200 fps (max) which is factory spec according to an older Lyman manual. It will deliver something around 3200-3300 ft/pounds at the muzzle which is plenty of smack for anything in the western hemisphere, and it is not a gentle loading at the other end either...especially if you have a curved butt plate. Yes but the reproduction Lyman sight made by Peabody is a superior solution and costs about the same. You don't have some delicate stem sticking up in the air and in the way of your grip etc.

I once got the attention of a Range Master by putting 5 rounds of 30-06 in an approx 12 foot diameter circle at a measured 700 yards, shooting an original model '95 with a Lyman 41 receiver sight, off-hand, while standing.

For someone with old guy eyes and quite shaky in the hands, I was pretty happy.

You're gonna have a ball with that rifle.

i have a mold on the way just have to get a sizer.
rigged up a few dummy rounds just so i could run them thru the action here at the house.
I need to figure out how to fix the Lyman 56 peep to come about 3 more clicks right.
