Ohio may allow rifles that fire the same rounds that are legal in pistols in Ohio. That list includes the 45-70. Probably that will be a Rossi Rio Grande for me because a real Marlin is out of reach right now. The thing is I don't need and butt stomping loads, heavy trapdoor loads would be fine. I was thinking a pan lubed (50-50 JPW/Alox) and a Lee 405 boolit with a card wad. The powder would be 3031. .025 or .062 wad? Any hints?

I will also be using a 45/70 if Ohio dose allow it next year , but I already have a Marlin in 45/70 ...and a Handie Rifle ....and a TC Contender Carbine

Just me
But find a load in the power range you want that shoots well
And it will kill deer fine

The start of a load you have listed should work great

What would be the benefit of the card wad with smokeless powders?

I have seen some folks claim it helps cut down on leading. Of course the basic fundamentals of loading and shooting cast preclude that notion. So I suspect some people do cuz they heard they were supposed to.
Myself, I never did and nary had a problem.

You can achieve the power levels you mention with excellent accuracy, less noise and perceived recoil, and considerably less expense using 2400, Unique, or 4227. Just a suggestion.

I'll run 2015 or Varget under a Accurate 46-405V in the Marlin.

If the PCR doesn't happen ---- TC Contender 15 inch barrel with the same 350 gr. bullet pushed with unique.

If I don't get one with the bow first.

That's iffy. I have seen handguns chambered for the .223. I would think they would need to list the specific permitted calibers, and go from there.

I have a .45 colt Henry that would do the job, or my old trapdoor 45/70; but since I have a scope on the muzzleloader, I'd probably just stick with that.

Ohio handguns have to be a straight walled case. No bottlenecks.

What is PCR? That would help a lot for me to understand this thread. Politically Correct Reloading?

PCR+ Pistol cartridge rifle. I know 45-70 in not really a pistol round but it is legal in ohio because it is a straight case and can be fired from a pistol. IMR 3031 because I have an unopened 8 pound metal can of it.

Scope, I'm just going to take the 2x off my shotgun and put it on the rifle
