Knowing I'm going Elk hunting this fall and decided to fire up my lead melter and get some more practice/hunting ammo made. I plan on shooting regularly this year with my rifle so I get really good at it for hunting. More so than normal, because I don't want any excuses on why I didn't get one. Well the only excuse that will be valid is if I don't see one. :D

I found my RCBS 35 200 2C mould and cast up a bunch. Then it dawned on me, I have a 4C of this one some where.

Well after digging around for about an hour in the man cave, I found it! it was an NOE RG4! Sweet!

Well for grins I put two HP pins it and 2 FP pins. I worked at casting with it for a spell, then checked the dropped boolits. No keepers. :( Turns out I had not given this mould the normal treatment before I started casting with it! Ah a new uncast with mould, didn't think I had any left..

So I put all 4 HP pins in it, worked it over per usual and set to casting a pile of HP boolits. These are all WW material water quenched. Got them all sized and lubed today, now I get to wait two weeks till they harden properly. Then load and shoot. :)

Here is a picture of them. I would ask what one is the RCBS mould but you'll be able to tell due to the HP quite quickly.
There is one small difference in the NOE vs the RCBS mould. See if you can tell.

The HP's I'll most likely be experimenting with, not sure if I'll hunt with them, may just kill varmints around the house with them. :D

Ever seen a Ground Hog hit with one at 25 yds. :D

and YES that is two types of lube on the bullets.

Looks like the NOE mold has a bit larger meplat which changes the nose ogive a bit. My dad is at it with the 35 Whelen lately and also went to the NOE mold and is getting really good results.

I liked my rcbs mould, but it would only pour .359 at best with straight ww. My noe pours the same 200 gr boolit @ .360 to .3605" with the same straight ww. The rcbs shot great in the whelen and the noe shoots even better but probably because i size @ .360. Both pour beautiful boolits. My brother in colorado is working with the noe for elk this year.
Good luck on your hunt.

Looking forward to a range report. Need to finish up my 35 Whelen project before it gets too hot to play with rifles. Hope you have some 4895 powder, maybe H335.

Handloader has an article on the .35 whelen in the latest issue. According to them it's still a viable hunting round.

"Well, no ****," say I in my best R. Lee Ermey imitation.

I love the .35s, my favorite being the emminently qualified .35 remington, which BTW I loaded with boolits from the same RCBS mould. Please excuse me for being surprised you're not loading something heavier. (although I'm quite certain one of those into the ribcage isn't going to be a love tap)
Given that this hunt will be pretty expensive proposition let alone a special experience, were it me I'd ask Ric how he feels about boolit choices. YMMV

Good luck and please take pictures.

PS Is that residual breast cancer awareness lube?

PS Is that residual breast cancer awareness lube?

No need to worry about that since we follow the "health watch" magazine cover? about how to prevent it. :)
