Did some shooting today. Most accurate load to date is repeatable. Upped charge wt. by 1 grain. Group turned into a pattern.:-?

Rifle is 1894 Win. 38-55 with 1-18" twist. Boolit is Meister 246 gr. bb, .380".

Would a shorter boolit be worth trying? The most accurate load is showing some yaw in the holes in the paper. The faster load today showed even more yaw.

Higher velocity is out, as none of the stouter loads have grouped. Have contacted powder Co. about safety of further reductions in charge weight.

..............Perzactly. The 18" twist should stabilize a 300 gr slug. A 250 to 270gr slug is std in this cartridge.

There are two common chambers for the 38-55 with two common size groups of barrels. Some modern rifles are using 2.082" long chambers with the same length brass and 0.375 - 0.377 groove diameter barrels. The original chamber and brass was 2.125" long with groove diameters between 0.378 - 0.382". It's highly recommended to have a chamber cast made for your rifle and to slug the bore of the rifle. I've run into this issue with 3 different rifles recently of which, one was an original 1894 Winchester made in 1894. The longer, thinner, 2.125" brass and 0.381" diameter bullets got things working normal instead of sideways as you're suggesting. The 38-55 was... and still is a great cartridge. That 100+ year old rifle still shoots great.
