I just bought my first 30-30 marlin(westernfield) with microgrooves. Everything I have read is that you cannot get fps over 1600fps. Is this true or false? I am sure this topic has been beat to death. My plan is to cast Lee 309-170-F size to 0.311 with gas checks. Use Pink lube. If necessary Heat treat. Most of my other bullets have been 50/50 wheel weight/soft lead with a pinch of tin thrown in. I was hoping to be able to get 1800 fps but i am happy with what will shoot accurately.

I have not seen a specific Micro groove sticky, but there has been around 66000 discussions on it.
The short story;
1)Boolit fit is key, as true in all things cast. Your plan to with that mold and size is a sound one. I can speak from experience, not speculation as that the same bullet I use in my Marlin, only I have sized mine to .310. At 311, so long it chambers (which I expect it should) will do fine.
2)Heat treating/water dropping the bullets most likely will not be necessary.
3) I am not too sure what pink lube is.
4) I have used H335, trail boss, unique, and 2400 powder. I prefer 2400. As I do not currently own a chrono, I do not have hard velocity numbers.

The pink sounds like what I call "carnauba pink". Lars BAC. Mike

2100 fps is possible with good accuracy with gas check, acww. Several powders work well. I usually load with R-7.

My Marlin 30-30 seems to be most accurate at 1850 FPS with the boolit sized at .311. and the BHN around 12-14.

1. If everything you read says cast bullets can't do well in MG barrels past 1,600 fps, then you have not read enough.

2. This has been discussed, tested and proved over and over again by members of this board for many years.

3. No need to heat treat alloy.

4. MG barrels tend to be a little larger in the grooves and lands and therefore require a larger bullet for a proper fit. Do that and they will shoot as well and as fast as any other barrel.

Your mould choice is OK, beagle it if it doesn't drop big enough. Marlins don't have a real throat so you have to watch seating depth to allow good chambering; the lever doesn't give much force like a bolt. 2K fps can be done but 1800 is a good hunting fps. You may need to heat treat for the higher velocities, may need to add some shot for As. I'm doing close to 1600 without GC in my MG 336, close to MOA @ 100. Unique, 2400 & LeverE are my powders of choice so far. I hear reloader7 does good too.

I just scored 2 lbs. of 2400. That is my go to cast rifle powder. I also picked up 4lbs of bullseye for $40 at a pawn shop. It was open, but at that price I was willing to take the chance. I got it home and there was 3lbs 14oz.. I will test with reddot, 2400 and h335(surplus).

My mold is dropping @ 0.313. Luckily I have sizers for 0.310,0.311 and 0.314 Which I picked up used. When I got them used I was dissapointed there wasn't a 0.308 or 0.309, but in practice I doubt I would ever need to use them except maybee in my K31's.

+1 to all that Char-Gar wrote. Size being the most important point, IMHO.

One little added stinker to the mix. Check bore just forward of chamber and push back out rear, push another all the way through from chamber out muzzle. Micrometer check each at 45 degrees (four checks of diameter) on each. I have seen more than one that the dovetail cuts were produced at a pace which caused .001"-.002" reduction in bore beneath cut. This does not help the Boolit! More time to cure, but not the end of world. Gtek

Been shooting my Marlin at 2400 fps and above. Does just fine. Still working on powders and loads but quit for the winter. Just had too many cold weather lube tests with revolvers.
I use .311" boolits. No leading at all.
