I am going to make some 16-1 to exeriment with 50 cal Maxi Balls and 44 cal hollow point boolits.

I have enough pure tin to make 15 lbs of 16-1. I'd like to make 20 lbs of alloy, but would have to add 4 oz of my 95-5, which would introduce 0.07% Antimony.

Is this amount of Antimony significant enough to have an adverse effect on Maxi Balls or hollow point boolits? If so, I'll settle for 15 lbs of 'pure' 16-1.

Thanks - Randy

If you want 16-1 then do not add the 95-5 and introduce any antimony. Go with the 15 lbs you have for the Maxi Balls. Save the 95-5 for something else. Been shooting Maxi Balls of 16-1 in my TC Blk Mtn Magnum for several years. Antimony is the principal hardener in ternary alloys we use. Even that small amount can severely lessen obturation and induce leading.

Thanks Larry! 15 lbs it is...

Just curious, why would you want 16-1 for maxi balls? Pure lead works great for them. Seems like a lot of expensive tin that you could use for other boolits.

Depends on how hard you are driving the LHP, but 16-1 would be good above 1250fps or so. Slower than that, I would want a bit softer, like 20-1.

Roger that. Pure lead woks fine up to 1000 fps +/- and the 20-1 up to 1250 +/-. I push the .50 Maxi Ball at 1570 fps out of the TC Blk Mtn Magnum so it needs the 16-1 to hold up.

I was wondering about this very topic for a while. My little .54 carbine shoots best with factory cast T/C Maxi-balls, and I have a mold that casts an identical slug, but it won't match them for accuracy. I have only ever cast mine with pure, and wondered if the factory ones were just a touch harder. My velocity is close to 1,500 fps. Good info.

Yeah, new inlines so you need to find what works.
I am an old codger that still shoots flinters and percussion so pure is all I use.
I just find something not right with the modern guns. Takes away something.

Agree with you on the inlines, would rather just use my TD than one of those. However the TC Blk Mtn Magnum with wood stock was/is a traditional percussion looking "Hawkin" style rifle with a stronger barrel and a faster twist is all.

My little .54 carbine is the Hawken style octagon/percussion with a 1-24" twist. I should dig it out and try a little harder boolit in it.
