I am new to the forum and I have a question. The IMR 4895 I used to use reloading my 110 GC lead bullets is getting really hard to find. But I have almost a pound of IMR 4198 the only data I can find that uses this is the heavier 160 grain bullets. Does anyone have any data that I could use to load with 4198. I am shooting it in my H&R 30/30 single shot so auto function is not important. Just wanted to load some plinkers and use the powder I have. I have seen a few people say around 14gr. Can some of you experts help me out on this. Powder here in N.C. is almost impossible to find now days. I have win 231 and acc,and unique for my handguns but sadly I have used all but a couple of ozs of my 4895. thank you for any help you can give.

The Unique should be a great powder for light boolits in 30/30. Have you looked in a Lyman manual?

You can check IMR powders 4895 and 4198 with a 110 grain jacketed bullet at the Hodgdon website and then go from there:

http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle

They show a start charge of 22.5 grains IMR 4198 with the 110 grain Speer flatpoint bullet for 2168 fps @ 27,800 CUP.

7 to 10 grains of Unique is a great plinking load with 110 grain boolits in the .30-30. Particularly in my Handi .30-30

Moving forward, keep your eyes peeled for Trailboss (decent for plinking), 2400, (generally just awesome powder.) and H335.

10-15grs of 2400 is also a great load for 113gr and 170gr boolits. Shoot them out of a Topper 058 also. Do have any reloader friends or aquaintances that have a Lyman 3rd Edition cast Bullet handbook. I sized my boolits to .308 and .309 and never really noticed any difference in accuracy between them.

Even had a few jugs of Unique but they didn't last long. Get there first and stand in line then go directly to the powder.

I just reviewed some of my 30-30 data and found a load of 18.5 grains of IMR 4198 works well with both the Lee "soup can" and Lyman 311041 in all 3 of my 30-30s.

I just got a new copy of the Ideal Handbook #34. It lists a load of 110gr jacketed bullet, 32.5gr of 4198 for a MV 0f 2745fps. This a apparently a max load. My Lyman Reloading Manual #49 lists powder 4198, starting load of 27grs with the 110gr jacketed bullet @ 2358fps, and a max of 29.5grs 4198 @ 2617fps. Please note that this is with a jacketed boolit. A little math shows 1gr = ~100fps. It's odd that none of my manuals list a 110gr cast boolit. My Lyman Cast Boolit Handbook #3 does list a 115 cast boolit, but not using 4198. It lists Red Dot, Green Dot, 700X, PB, Unique, Herco, SR-4756, and several others. Depending how fast you wanted to go, you might look into using Red Dot or Green Dot. They are usually available, and give decent MV, unless you are going for max MV. Hope this helps some. mikey
