I've been casting boolits for my handguns for years now and now I'm venturing into doing the same for my 1898 Krag. I have cast several gas checked lead boolits from a Lee C309-200-R mold. My usual powders for my rifles are 4064 and 4895. I'm leaning more towards the 4064. Anyone have any input I can use? I'm also looking to possibly use other powders that may perform better for cast boolits as well. Also does anyone have any preferences for lube for these type bullets as that I'm also looking to use them in my Swiss K31 as well.

Usually the Mid range speed powders like 2400, RL - 7, AA 5744, IMR 4227, IMR - 4198 do well .

You may even want to try some Unique.

Speeds in the 1,600 - 1,700 fps range will usually offer exceptional accuracy.

Thanks, Ben!
I actually have some 2400 and 4227 that I haven't used in some time. Any idea where I can find some load data for these?

Thanks, excess650.
The old NRA 50/50 has been my old 'go-to' lube in my pistols forever. Since this is my first venture into the land of gas checks and rifle boolits, I was a bit hesitant about all of this before I put my face behind a rifle bolt. Good to know this lube favorite of Elmer Keith's is still good for me on this endeavor. For me, it's all about moderate loads and accuracy!

excess650, I had planned on getting the Lyman 4th edition for cast boolits. Would the 45th have the same data info?

I use the lee 309-160 over 20gr of 2400 for my k31 with exceptional results....
I also run the lee 312-155 with 18gr of 2400 for awsome paper punching....

I too shoot my K31 as a 30/284 and have found that 3031 with a 170gr cast works very nicely.

Two of the go-to powders for reduced or cast loads are SR4759 and RL7.

Jagd, I shoot an Old West 190 gr bullet in my sporterized Krag with IMR 4227. 18 gr for about 1500 fps. Good for 2 moa.
