This is a thread dedicated to the many here regarding loading heavy 7.62x39 cast boolits. I give full credit to those from this board who have been kind enough to share load data as well as reloading materials, you know who you are. I'll start off this thread with the unboxing of boolits from a board member, and as soon as I'm done editing my video, will post my loads and results. So here's a teaser:

How appropriate! I just came here to look for some information on loading some 177gr boolits that I cast out of an old Ideal 320366 mold for my 7.62x39s.

With a bullet as long as we are using, I see you have gas checks on even through the bullet will go below the case shoulder. I'm interested in seeing what your results will be.

not bad, getting a tripod will help a lot for filming. :)

I've got one, I just didn't have access to it when the boolits came, so iPhone it is for this video. The next one has a pretty good camera setup.

They may not need loaded as deep as you might think. I would test how long you can leave them.

99798

If you make one of those and gently install and remove it a few times you can get a good idea how long you can leave them.

I can tell you right now that the lead will either sheer or deform enough so that it won't split the shells. I had them loaded up for at least a week before I went to the range.

Cut a sized case with a little dremel wheel, then smooth out the burrs so it don't scratch the boolit. Put a dab of grease on the boolit nose so it don't stick in the bore. Then you have 4 petals that will hold the bullet to see how deep your gun needs them. Using this method saves making too many dummy rounds.

Most times with lead I get best results when they are crammed in the throat.

if you magic marker up the bullet before you load it in your 'custom neck split case' you'll be able to see exactly where it moved the first time.

I'm not generally critical of posts and other peoples efforts but really that video of UNBOXING some cast bullets is a bit much. Show the boolits by all means but making a production of opening the cardboard is a box too far.

I'd be excited if someone sent me a box o' boolits that look like that too. Please do share your results as you progress with the load development. I'd like to know the mold specs also. I've only played with the 155 and am interested in your results.

All of the 7.62x39's I've played with could be loaded with the gas check still in the mouth and were only length limited by certain magazines. In other words they have all had generous throats.

If there's anything I appreciate about good rifles and women it's that they have generous throats.

Well,I've an sk that is so generous a 308 bullet will slop down the bbl about 4'' from the breech before it stops. W a pp'd spire point at .316 I can easily exceed mag length at 200gr .

The loads shoot 2x3 inch groups at 50yd at 1350 fps seated to mag length w/22gr of IMR4350 single feed seated to the neck base they will take 25.3 gr and go into the low 1700s w/ slightly better groups.

Thanks for sharing. I bet they would do even better if you shot from bags.

I'm curious why you were holding the gun way out away from you on each first shot? Were I afraid of my loads I'd put the gun in a machine rest and press the trigger by remote. Never seen an sks like that is it some sorta bullpup stock?

Looks like you had fun and learned some.

Well, I didn't have a whole lot of time to film, but I still wanted to keep my pretty face in case anything bad happened. I figured having a little distance between me and the chamber wouldn't be a bad thing. The stock is an SGWorks conversion kit (http://sgworks.com/) and I think it's a great modernization of the SKS. It was a bunch of fun and I definitely learned a lot about working up a load and accuracy. Thanks for watching.

What mold were those boolits cast from? They look really nice!

They are from a NOE 311365 198 grain bullet mould.

I recently got that mould but haven't had time to season it and cast some up. Was planning on it for my 308's but may have to try it in my CZ527 also.
