I've been reloading since Reagan was president but up to this point I've loaded others boolits, or bought Js.

At auction this weekend I picked up one each of the Lyman 457406, and Lyman 358477. I'm sure I'll eventually have questions, but none yet - I'm excited to get started. I'm thinking that I will start with a blend close to Lyman's #2 for both the 4570 and the 38 special / 357 mag.

:-D

Happy happy happy.

Nice score. You can get by pretty soft with the 45/70. Especially if you're looking to hunt with it. Not that expansion is really needed, but it will mushroom out a bit if the alloy is soft enough. Generally, in 357 loads I use plain old wheel weights and have no issues, but I seldom push the 357 over 1500 FPS.

The majority of my .38 Specials are cast in range lead (mystery metal). I shoot Lee wadcutters, Lachmiller 160 SWC, Lyman SWC, and a Lee 15? SWC. At my .38 reload speeds I get good shooting bullets. For my .357 Mag. I either shoot the wadcutter or the Lachmiller cast in wheel weight alloy up to mebbe 1200 fps. Clean the molds up real good and melt some lead, the only way to learn to cast bullets, is to cast bullets...

Be very careful. Moulds are like rabbits. One day you have two moulds then there is 12, then 35, then.....

I water drop my 45-70 boolits for a bhn of around 19 to 20 put that on top of 47gr of H322 in a starline case at 1653fps and I would hunt T-Rex if I could find one!! I have never even considered an air cooled 45-70 boolit.... Maybe I will try it some time.

Smoke4320.... LOL, havent you heard? There is no cure!

One of the coolest things is to see that first boolet fall from a new mold! That always feels good, so then you get another mold, and then another........:cbpour:

But no matter how excited you get when you see that first "perfect" bullet, don't pick it up! At least wait 'till it cools...BTDT

358477 is my favoite CB for 38/357 loading, from mild to wild. Always been accurate for me. At this time of my life I cast mostly from clip on wheel weights and 2% tin which will meet nearly any 38/357 need. I started with Lyman #2 back in the 60's but discovered you don't need a CB that hard for 99% of 38/357 uses.

Yes, I'd say that is a pretty accurate statement. Here are just a few of mine:

I was quite happy to get my first mold a few months ago from another member on here. Now I have 4. How did that happen?

I'm pretty sure I giggled. Glad I was by myself in the garage :cbpour:

It's not just the molds I'm afraid. It's the fact that you'll find yourself walking through a parking lot and seeing a wheel weight laying on the asphalt and actually think to reach down, grab it and stick it in your pocket!! Depending upon the size that thing might just get you two or three more boolits before you have to go buy lead again.

By the way, I did the pick up the boolit bare handed thing day before yesterday. Won't do that again soon, luckily it was my left hand.

Don't worry, that will be a self correcting problem. It won't take long either.
