I am looking at a TC renegade 54 cal flintlock. Is there any certain things to look for? It is used and looks to be older (the walnut stock is yellowish and oxidized looking) The metal looked good and the last inch or 2 looked good on the barrel. The butt plate had some scratches. There was a long scratch in the stock but it looked to be just in the lacquer. I have no problem sanding it and putting on a oil finish. I have little experience with flintlocks. I am putting one together know but don't own any others. I will take a muzzleloader bore light I can drop it down the barrel with me next time. Also what is a fair price? Seems most traditional muzzleloaders around here are 54 and a few 50 but I never see a 45 and I would like a 45.

I see them around here in good shape for 400 and up. Not sure what they are actually selling for.

You already thought of it, but I was gonna suggest you check the bore out. A few yrs ago, I bought a T/C New Englander, 54 cal. and I neglected to check the bore before purchasing it. I did check it when I got it home and it was kinda rough. With a well lubed maxiball, I have not run into any problems loading it. I have not even tried to shoot RB, in fact I have not shot the rifle very much at all. Iron sights and my eyesight does not go together well.

I don't know about price. If everything checks out buy it. I have a 56 smooth bore love it.

What the others said! Also, check the action itself. I.e., the set triggers and lock, which may need a thorough cleaning + lubrication. Check the frizzen too to see whether it throws a shower of sparks and whether the flint strikes the top 1/3 of it. If "no" to either, you may need to reharden and/or replace it. (If you can't replace it via T/C, a simple 1/8" shim under the flint will raise it enough.). Check the vent liner as well, as it may need replacement too. Btw, T/C used to replace the older locks with redesigned ones, which strike the frizzen correctly, for free, but you'll have to ask them whether they still do this or even have the parts to do this.

money doesn't grow on trees for me and in the past few years I picked up a few other cheaper makes of muzzle loaders for a few bucks. Now with hindsite in place I wish I saved the few bucks here and there and bought a TC. I have one I bought as a kit in the mid 70's and IF a used muzzle loader is to be bought by me from here on it will be a TC or better! Go buy it!

I would say go with the bore lite, a severely pitted bore makes a good wall hanger. in that case, it is worth 50 to 90 for the stock and just buy a new barrel.

I think I will go look at it tomorrow and get it if the barrel looks good.

Picked it up and the bore looks great. Hopefully can get a few shots in tonight. It is a older one with a older lock.

I am curious, what did you give for it? and glad to hear the bore is in great shape.

I hope you enjoy your new rifle. I have only started in the black powder world, but am having a great time with it. It must be contagious, I let my shooting buddy shoot mine, and now he has one too. I bought a .54 cal caplock, and am currently looking for a flinter in the same cal. Just something different. I've got an elk on my list, and here in Oregon .50 cal. is the minimum for elk.

Ya that's why I stayed with 54. For me a round ball in 54 is a minimum for elk. I have a hawken percussion in 54 as well. They are both 1 in 48 twist. But I would really like a 45 just for shooting and I may use it for mule deer. I am looking at the Lyman great plains rifle just wish I could get it in 45 and not 50.

Just bought a beautiful TC 45 caplock for $200. No one around here wants a 45.
