I do like the way Glen presents the material , it reminds me of the gun writers I read as a younger man .

Interesting, both historical information and practical information. His sizing at .357, unless that was a typo, goes against virtually ever thread/post regarding .38/.357, which would be .358 plus. In fact, I don't recall a single recommendation for .357 cast Boolits. That is food for thought.

After reading his articles I have come to the conclusion that Mr. Fryxell will generally give you something to think about.

Great article, and I can't criticize Mr. F. for the .357 comment - maybe his alloy (BHN 8) is malleable enough to obturate better when starting at that malleability.

One thing about Glen, if he sizes to .357, it is because it works for him. He has no axe to grind.

And he is not guessing - or using one 5 shot group to make his decision. So, yes, food for thought.

No axe to grind or criticism of the author, just contrary to everything I have ever learned/seen. Is there a single thread or post or manual that recommends less than .358? Are there any .38/.357 Boolits or standard molds sold at .357? He may be onto something, or not, or it was a typo. As I mentioned, food for thought.

For my 357 long range match revolver I size to .357". .358" wouldn't chamber in the FA.

You would expect exacting tolerances in a FA

For my Ruger 45 Colt I size .452". The throats are every bit as uniform as the FA and .453" won't chamber. It's not uncommon sizing to nominal caliber diameter but I highly recommend accuracy/leading testing in YOUR revolver. Most commonly I recommend sizing to a mild snug fit in the throats and in my 357 and 45 Colt that's .357" and .452" respectively. What I never recommend is to size larger than throat diameter and let the throats act as sizing dies.

Shows me I have a lot to learn. I have never shot a single .357 Boolit in my various .357s, Ruger, and S&W. .452 is what I used in my Ruger Old Vaquero and Winchester 94s, but most/all commercial Boolits are .452, so no news flash there.

If your colt "38"Sp.and/.or ".357" revolvers were made before 1970,you likely find the barrel will slug .355 or .356, and a .357 bullet cannot be pushed through the cylinders (manually).. Onceabull

I'm curious as to the groove and throat dimensions of Glen's revolvers. I'd bet a dollar against a doughnut hole that he knows.

Very good article indeed, no surprise from Mr Fryxell. At one time I could have cared less if I ever loaded or fired another .38 or .357 but someday that shall pass. When it does I hope I can find a 358439.

I have the same thing going on with my 357. Throats are a uniformly .357. My barrel slugs at .357 as well.
I read the revolver sticky when I started loading for it so I sized my boolits .357. I have wonderful accuracy and no leading at all. Just for grins I sized some boolits .358 and shot them as a test. It didn't effect the accuracy at all that I could tell. I use the same .357 diameter for my 9mm. It allows me to use a variety of boolits in either weapon.

I had Eric do the same mold for me last year. I put out a bunch in a hurry before the snow fell.
Waiting for the snow to go away to try them out.
Eric has converted several molds me. A great job always. Reasonable price.

Great article! I consulted Glen for HP pin dimensions before sending this mold to Erik.
Did one like Glen recommended, for .38 Spl and one with a shallow cavity for .357 Mag.

The results in a ltwt snubbie are excellent -

I've learned a lot from Mr. Fryxell, and I really enjoy his history info and his style of writing.

What alloy Bill?

MtGun44
03-12-2014, 12:37 AM
It is pretty soft, range lead, IIRC. My range lead normally runs about 8 BHN.

No need for a group buy, that is a normal, readily available Lyman mold with
Erik's Cramer conversion added. Of course, I think Miha at MP has probably
run a clone of this, not certain.

I should also point out that my results with wet phone books are right at 1/2 the
depth seen in calibrated ballistic gelatin when tested with factory ammo that
is also tested in ballistic gel. So, I use a piece of wire to probe to the base,
so we need to add about 5/8" for the length of the boolit and then double it, so
this would be just short of 10" in ballistic gelatin.

They show up on evilbay quite often. Eric did my conversion and returned the mold in less than ten days.
My boolits look like those above. Some loaded with 12 gr of 2400. Just waiting for Spring.
