Anyone try this?

In a cartridge with a long neck, two short bullets seated directly on top of each other on top of a load for a single bullet of their total weight. E.g. two 240gr 45 cals in a 45/70 with a 500gr load.

I read a test where the Army 2 - .224 bullets in a 223 , 33 and 31 grain I think.
I tryed 2 round balls in a 50 cal ML
Past 50 yards 1 was always 6-12 " from the other.

I also load 2 .430 round balls in my 44 mag

Can't see any reason your idea would not work

We shoot three RB'S in the 45/70 case. It was once loaded for the army for hunting game. You can find it in the book by Spence Wolf called Loading for the origonal trap door 45/70. We use smokless not BP.

There was also the old 7.62 Nato "piggy back" round with a hollow base loaded on top of a flat base with a bevel on it. Shot a bunch of that in VN and I wasn't impressed.

Someone shot two 454309s loaded back to back in a .458 Win Mag. Been intending to try that but I forget when I need to prepare for it. Don't see why two 200 grain WC .45s wouldn't work in a .45/70 as well./beagle

Andy, I have a 50 cal cartridge in my collection. Three sub 50 cal bullets in what looks like a nylon jacket. Frank

The 3 ball loads in 45/70 have been referred to as "Pawn Shop" loads. I have shot 2 ball loads in a crossman BB air pistol, and 44 magnum, in both cases they had some utility.

There used to be a thing about boreing a 357 mag cylinder all the way through, then use 357 max cases and load it with several lead disks like watch batteries. Maybe 3 or 5 or something.

..............Dean Grennell was a greta admirer of Hensley and Gibbs moulds. He had a 4 banger which dropped short 38 cal full wadcutters, with one lube groove. I think their weight was like 53 grs? In a 38 Special you could put in 2. In the 357 mag you could use 3, but the bottom one had to be sized to like 354" or so due to casewall taper. The 357 Max could do 4 for a 208gr payload.

IIRC the 357 mag he was shooting would put 6 rounds for 18 hits in about 8" at 25 yards.

If you take the 357 shot capsules you can load them up with flattened #4 (or was that #6 buck?). I don't remember now but I would take a buckshot and drop it in the primer hole of a shell holder and with a piece of steel rod tap it with a hammer. The hole in the shell holder make them about the perfect diameter. You could stack 5 or 6 in a shot capsule and then load it in the 357.

They would sometimes clump on the target so I used the little paper discs from a 3 hole punch between them to keep them from sticking together. I don't know how effective they'd be against a determined attacker beyond 30 ft. You can also use the same shot capsules to shoot 30 cal bullets from the 38-357.

I got a SW 500-(2 cav) 260gr RN mould from Dan at MM ,I wanted to try a 2 bullet load.
I seated the bullets on top of each other using Blue Dot,at 7 yds they were 1.5" apart very close to bullseye,at 10 yds they were 3-4" apart still on,at 25 yds they were 6-8" apart.
I also tried 1-260gr RN and and 00 buck and 1-260gr with #4 shot these shot OK at 7 yds.

In the internal U.S. war fought from 1861 to 1865 the Irish Brigade recruited from New York City and other eastern cities used Springfield 1842 .69 caliber smooth bore muskets loaded with "buck and ball" loads. The load consisted of a bore-diameter ball with three buckshot balls on top of it. At close range it was quite deadly as evidenced from the effectiveness of the Irish Brigade's actions on the battlefield. At Gettysburg National Memorial many of the bronze markers and site monuments are of a bowling ball-sized ball with three baseball-size balls sitting on top in "pawn shop" fashion and represents this loading.

The Irish Brigade dished it out on the battlefield but they also took it, with more men killed than were serving at any given time! Click on the link below to see their materiel and equipment:

I have tried the "buck&ball" in my .69 smoothie. At 50 yd I just made 4 holes at a pigon board.[32 clays on a 4'x6' cardboard] No hits.I was not using any cup though. At a massed formation of men it would be devasting at close range though.
Interesting sideline that most early war units were using the .69 with that load. Both sides. They all jumped to the .58 Springfields or Enfields as soon as they could. By wars end only a few units had any.

Some years back, I shot 2 000 buckshot loaded a 357 Magnum case out of some sixgun. Up close they printed the nicest snake eyes you could hope for, but must past 15 feet or so they started to spread pretty good.

Yrs.--- back I fired 2 round balls in a 45 long colt with a light charge--distance was like 30 ft.--1st ball (I persume) hit in middle of target other ball was about 8 in. below it---bore leaded badly---soft and no lube----

I started with 2 .457 rnd balls cast of WW's sized 2 at a time in a star sizer and stuck together with lube. They became oblong and had agood bit of bearing surface. I loaded them in .45 Colt cases over 8 grs of unique, & a standard primer, & crimped over the front of the ogive. This payload weighed approximately 280 or 290 grs, as I recall, & hit aproximately 8 to 10 inches apart at approximately 100 yds. They hit with some authority.

I've loaded those 38/357 shot capsules with 3 #0 Buck in the capsule and they printed about 8-10" at 25 yds. Might be a good self-defence load?
