This has probably been done but I thought I'd share my thoughts.

I have a NOE 360 -180 with the HP and FN pins. But I don't like the size of the HP, So I just always cast them as FN. I was doing some reading here about on game performance with CB on deer and hogs ......

Anyway, I I started casting today and wanted a "dimple" in the nose.

Has or does anyone make a nose punch with a dimple maker in it? that was my first thought ... anyone make something like this.
So, I took a BB and some lube and stuck it up in the NP. and it worked great until it moved from center. and if I pulled down too hard it did exactly what I wanted it to do when fired and upset the boolit making basically a HP WC. So I gave up, until I started loading.

After loading a few I looked over at my Lee universal flaring die and ... well I used the smaller one to make my dimple in the FN. Worked ok but there's a little too much play and hitting the center of the nose is tough.

Has anyone else done something similar. or is there a NP that will do it.

I have a couple NOE RG molds. I've often thought of turning my own HP pins with a smaller/shallow HP. Maybe you know some one with a lathe?

You could also buy some spare pins from NOE chuck them in a drill press and make your own pins with a file, sandpaper or stone.

All just ideas. I've never done any of the above just thought about it.

Good luck,

David

I thought the same but I don't know that I could center those either

Yes, it would be a possibility that the point you made might not be centered on the pin, though lacking a fixed cutting tool, the abrading of the metal should be fairly even. I'd say as Djones did that you should find/cultivate someone with a lathe. I make new pins for a lot of my HP molds.

I prefer a round bottomed rather shallow cavity, as opposed to monstrous big cones or especially the old hole drilled 3/4 of the length. The object is to get the expansion started (so it can approximate and continue as a mushroomed flatpoint would). If fired at high velocities the old hole in the nose countinuing clear into the body of the boolit HP will mushroom and shear off several times, and fragment the boolit.

You could just grind the point of your present hollow point pin down (flatten the point), and then round the edges. That should end up pretty well centered.

I use the Forster 1/8" HP tool to HP bullets with. I HP my 35-200-HPs to 3/16" deep for excellent expansion in game out of my 35 Rem.

Larry I have one of those also ... Haven't used it yet. I may have to try and grind down one of the pins I have to make my dimple. I really like the way the BB trick looked but it moves too much material. I took some pictures but they just look like shiny spots. After thinking , I believe the FN of 50/50 will flatten nicely at 1800 - 1900 fps on game.

Yep, the Dish HP as I refer to it.

NOE had the option on a few of his designs. I really like it.

+1 on the Forster Tool. Should be able to control your dimple size with the stop collar. Works for me.

Why not call/PM/email NOE and see if he will make you the pin you desire? Worth a try, all he can say is no.

I have launched that very same Glenn Larsen designed boolit from 1300 to 2150 into quite a few deer, that boolit made of 50/50 launched at the speed you list will kill every deer you want to with it...iffin you do your part as the delivery man correctly.....NO DOUBTS. You may get a bit more expansion after your efforts, but the deer likely will not notice all your added effort. The C-358-180 as originally designed by Glenn Larsen is about as close to the perfect 357/357Max hunting boolit ever devised in MY OPINION....it does not need any "ACCESSORIZING"......Larry will disagree with me a bit, but that simply is what it is....two different opinions from two different well meaning souls.

Mike, When Veral Smith was away from production, I bought Glenn's 180 and shot it a bit. I then sold my LBT185 FN. That Larson boolit is a keeper in all ways. I have even PB'd two cavities of mine to play with.
