View Full Version : Forum "reputation" feature

Is there a particular reason that the "reputation" feature has not been enabled on this site? I've seen it enabled on other sites that use this forum software and it's nice since it allows you to agree with a person's post without having to create your own post in a thread which just clutters it with extraneous "me too" posts.

I tired manually encoding a proper URL with it like is normally generated in an attempt to see if it existed, but for some reason was just now showing up on the web interface and it returned a message saying that the reputation feature was not enabled.

Stick around long enough and you'll develop your own reputation based on content and not a click of the button.

Just sayin'.

I'm not concerned my my "reputation" on the forum. I just saw the post of someone else earlier and agreed with it, so I was going to click on the "reputation icon", but I couldn't find it. Since this site is running the same software as the other site, I was curious why I couldn't find it. I thought perhaps the "skin" that I had chosen did not have that feature.

Personally, I find the capability to "like" or "add to reputation" a particular post to be useful since it does not clutter up the thread with a lot of "me too" posts.

from my understanding the reputation feature is per person, not for the thread.

"Reputation feature"?

Never heard of such a thing.

It was in the vBulletin v4.1.11 and this forum is running vBulletin v4.2.2, so the capability is there is the owner of the board decides to turn it on.

The icon that you click on if it is enabled is to the left of the "report post" icon below your avatar / locations / post count section.

I've noticed it on the glock.pro site. Don't remember where else I saw it.

I just think it would cut down on the "+1" / "me too" posts.

Blammer

And how is "liking" a post any different on that regard than someone posting a "+1" or "me too"?
Actually, there isn't any difference. But, when somebody gives a +1 he often states why he agrees.
That is 'discussion' of a sort, and this is a discussion forum.
Alternatively, if he disagrees, he can specify what makes him see things differently.
Anonymously clicking a 'down tick' would indicate disagreement, but the author wouldn't know who disagrees, or why.

If you think that mutely pushing a 'like button' is a form of discussion, you may not have much to say.

Other than is takes less bandwidth and results in less emails sent out for notifications.
Do you get an email everytime somebody replies to a post you have participated in?
I would consider that a monumental waste of time, and would immediately make a change in my User CP.

Exactly... It's not "reputation" per se, but that seems to be what vBulletin calls it. Some of the forum software have a "like" button / icon for each post which is closer to what I think is useful. They also list who "liked" that post. I've seen cases where a post might have a dozen or more "likes" and that just means that there are not a dozen or more "+1" posts cluttering up the thread. Besides, it gets grouped right in the post, not who knows how many pages further down possibly. I consider it an efficiency issue.

The "+1"s with explanations are one thing, but the posts that just put a "+1" by itself clutter the thread and in some cases, if the poster did not quote the post to which he was replying, then you might not even know which post he was agreeing to.

I've definitely noticed the "post count junkies". They will start a thread and then reply to every comment with something like "thanks for the reply".

Not to be argumentative or anything, but I can live without any sort of a reputation feature on the forum.

I also wouldn't be sad if the - rate this thread - by so many stars feature was removed, or simply ignored much like it used to be.

http://www.wpclipart.com/signs_symbol/stars/5_star_rating_system/5_Star_Rating_System_3_and_a_half_stars.png

No one (myself included) used to bother to anonymously rate posts. If a thread was really good for some reason it was pretty obvious. It had a lot of replies, and generated interest all on it's own. I don't think that a post needs to be graded, or have a star rating to tell you how good or bad it is. I'm still able to work that out all by myself.

Lately there have a been a whole bunch of oddly rated threads. I generally manage to ignore the forums post rating feature completely. The rating stars have been so unbalanced for the past few days they managed to mess with the part of my brain that recognizes patterns, somehow tricking me into taking notice of them again.

Maybe its a new social networking thing that I'm just too old to appreciate, but so be it.

I'm in the "If it ain't broke, don't bother fixing it" camp, sorry.

I had seen it enabled on other firearm sites running vBulletin, so I thought I would ask. I didn't know that some people would get so bent out of shape over it.
