Came across my 8x57 Mauser in the gun safe yesterday. Haven't messed with it for 10 years. I remember it being a shooter so I thought I should take it out and shoot it some. I slugged the barrel at .323 and .314. I have several hundred 193 g. gc boolits that mic at .324 and 50+ primed brass. Problem is, I can't find the load data I used 10 years ago. My 3 reloading manuals do not specify any pistol powder loads for this combination. I am sure my initial loads were using a pistol powder. I have at this time Unique, Herco, H110, WSF, 231, Clays, International Clays and 296. Since it is very difficult to find powder for sale these days I am restricted to this selection. Oh I also have H4198, SRB-118 and 4895. Does anyone have a load recommendation? Thanks in advance.

Thanks dondiego. I too have a Mauser that I had tucked away in its shipping box. Any suggestions for a 175 grain bullet. Powders are starting to be a little more available recently. I located some IMR 4064. Any suggestions for a 175 grain cast bullet? Lyman's 47th edition calls for 46.0 grains with a jacketed bullet. Thanks.

my lyman cast bullet book says

181gr cast H4895 start at 29.8gr max is 37.8

I would use 28gr of H4895 to start and work up in 1 gr increments.

I use 35gr of H4895 behind the Lee Karabiner at around 230gr. Gives me 1,850fps.

Start at 28 gr of the 4895 and use a 1/2 - 3/4 gr Dacron filler. Work up to 32 gr with the Dacron filler if you want more oomph. I have a 190 gr GB mould and 31 gr of 4895 with the Dacron filler is my standard load with it. It will run 1800+/- fps depending on barrel length. Shown is that load in Turk cases with the Berdan primers to test my own made GCs vs Hornady's GCs. Each group was shot with a clean barrel and the 1st to foulers were slightly out of the group. Pasters are 1".

Just loaded 20 testers for my Spanish 1916 Mauser in 8mm, using IMR 3031 and the Lee 175 gc boolit cast in Lyman #2(approx). IF the weather co-operates I'll find out tomorrow how well they do. Powders are still hard to find out here.

I agree with dondiego, I use 10-14g Of Unique or Herco and its a good cheap to shoot load. I like pistol powders in the 8x57.If just plinking to 200 you don't need 2000 fps.
