Hi Folks,
Have been offered this rifle. Both barrels are rifled and clean, owner measured the bores at .690.
Present owner thinks it is a British make trade gun.Have a South African Name and address.Which I cannot remember .Any ideas? If I buy,I will be shooting.this.

Sounds interesting, but you've got scant information to go on. If the barrels are regulated properly, so as to converge at some particular distance, it may take quite a bit of experimentation to discover the particular load for which they were regulated. Some people have done some pretty tricky load tweaks, using different loads in the two barrels, to get a double to converge.

Still and all; a 60 cal double would be a sweet big game rifle once you get it figured out.

I think this is what they call a "cape gun".

A cape gun is a SxS with one rifle caliber barrel and one shotgun barrel. Though cape guns can be muzzleloaders but the OP said that both barrels are rifle and of 69 caliber. So it is a double rifle not a cap gun.

Sounds neat. I'd also like to see some pics. I would love to own a double barrel muzzleloader eventually.

That 69 cal double muzzleloader rifle does sound interesting!!! If the workmanship is good, the bores clean and the price reasonable sure would be tempting. Almost sounds like a Raj India type gun but obviously has an African connection. Hard to say about POI regulation until you shoot it, but probably worth the slight risk even if they aren't perfect.

The Lyman 69 cal Minié should be a good one for that rifle along with a patched roundball of course. I have an M1861 Navy 69 caliber that shoots both that Minié and a PRB great. Only down side is my average shooting session of about 10 shots launches over a pound of lead downrange. :)

A friend at the range has just bought a Double 12 Bore Belted Ball Rifle and we where putting it through its paces at 50 yards,4Drams of BP and Belted balls unpatched at this stage. All who fired it said how easy it was on the recoil,we where also surprised at the accuracy we got. of the three of us who fired it not one ball was outside a 5 inch Circle. So at least at that distance it was very effective.I believe that type of rifle was intended for short distances.

The biggest trick to shooting the old doubles is figuring out what it likes for a load to make it regulate to the sights. Most of the old guns were sent with loading data but over the years this data was in many cases lost and powders recommended back then are not around today so it may take some experimenting to figure out what works. As was said above these were heavy bore hunting rifles and ment for close range hunting ... in most cases 50 to 75 yds. tops, so regulation of the barrels will probably be in this range and the barrels may very well cross at something further.
Like to see a picture of this rifle when you get it.
