Got of work early

Went to town and got a box full of 22 boolits in the mail.

Went to a pawn shop and bought a old redding scale and 1000 large rifle primers for a total of $40

Went and checked out my new 200 yard shooting range.

Then on the way home....was speeding up from 55 to 70 and something went BOOM on my truck. Looks like I broke my transfer case into about three pieces....so now I am sitting in my truck waiting for a tow thats gonna cost me who knows how much of the money I don't have. Oh well.

Sell the primers and scale locally. maybe the tow truck driver likes to reload?

Tow truck happens to be My boss, so I only have to pay for fuel. Shouldn't be too bad. Worst is gonna be finding a transfer case. I found one hooked to a transmission for $350

This truck has been great. I guess something has to give after 140,000 miles

Must be a common problem. My buddy lost his transfer case about the same way on his Chevy with about the same mileage.

In my very best 1980's lingo, " Bummer Dude" :(

On the bright side, replacing a transfer case isn't the worst job.

Bad news is the case isn't real cheap, but the good news is that the
change out work is pretty straight forward, access is usually pretty
good.

Very common. Jasper Engines rebuilds these with new parts and changes out a few of the OEM bearing plates with their design and it will not happen again. It is something with the input shaft bearing not getting enough oil.

Not fun sitting by the side of the road with a broken truck. Congrats on the pawnshop find! Keep looking up, things will get better. At least, it's not 10 deg with -8 windchill index, like it's here now.

Another plus JR is that YOU KNOW HOW TO FIX IT, and probably access to the tools to do it. At least you won't have to take a loan out to have a shop fix it for you!!!!

Bullshop Junior
02-26-2014, 11:17 PM
Yea I can fix it. Just don't know when. Don't really have the money for a new case for another couple weeks. Luckly i like like 3 miles from work so walking wont be too bad.

No kidding. But it wasn't any fun picking up bits of gears and clutches out of the middle of the road.

Yea. One other thing that happened...

I got home and put the brick of primers on the counter and went to the truck to get my rifle...and wen I was outside Amanda wanted to see what the blue box that said winchester was...opened it, took out a tray, and dumped a whole tray in her hands, and then was looking at them asking what they were when I came in....they are probably fine, but I was always thought not to touch them with your hands so it ticked me off. Least now I cant resell them :)

If the weather isnt to bad see if you can find a bike to pedal around, in good weather it beats walking and wouldnt be bad for 3 miles to and from. A used one shouldnt be to much of an outlay.

Look on the bright side, if you still lived in Alaska it would of cost you three times as much to get it fixed. And now you can replace it in warm weather to boot.

Looking back at the many miles of wilderness winter roads you have driven in the last month or so you DO have someone watching over you.

How on earth did you manage to eat 3 hogs in such a short time?

P S Jasper has been in business for many years.

I have no idea how many of their rebuilt engines I sold over the years and never a problem.

Tell that young lady you are sorry for YOUR not teaching her to be careful with primers.

Over the years me and my kids have spilled and picked up with our greasy paws many spilled primers.

Don't remember any misfires yet.

The finger grease only makes it easier to seat them.:kidding:

Bin here, dun that. It just ain't worth picking up the pieces. Can't remember, but there's a whole boatload of needle bearings in them suckers, and they were all laying on my shop floor when I split it.

Check craigslist you may find a usable used one for 60-150$ depending on the year. They are a mess to rebuild but not too difficult if you pull the diagrams from the interweb. I've rebuilt a few myself in my 4wheelin days and rebuild kits were 150$ish. Check the fluid at least twice a year or whenever ya change the oil. Lots of chevys used a slip yoke on the transfer case output. When that seal goes so starts the fluid going, and they ain't gunna run dry. The seals cheap n easy compared to the whole case.

I did a few primer tests just for fun. Took being soaked 3 days underwater to kill 2 of 10. 6 days underwater will kill 10 of 10. At 2 days underwater the winchesters I tested all went bang 10 of 10. They were soaked in a shot glass, deeper water could potentially change the pressure/results. I'm certain they'll be fine from handling.

Bhn its not just chevys they are all chain driven aluminium housed throw aways anymore. Ya gotta go old school if ya want beef. Cast iron housed gear driven was ended in 1980 for most light trucks.

You got .22 ammo!!! In some parts of the country you could trade that for a transfer case.

Just look at this as one more bump in the road of life and a good reason to teach Amanda how to reload.
