So I am getting a Couple molds for 730 gr for a 458 win mag. and I have found no published data on powders to try and charges to start with. I have quite a few different powders but I am curious on what is recommended or what has been proven. most of my powders are hodgdon, IMR and Alliant.. Suggestions

I don't have any data for you, but I'm interested in you reporting on the results. That sounds like you will get a kick out of it. Will it fit the throat without alteration?

Will there be enough room for powder?

Will the twist stablilize that long a boolit? Have you checked with Greene's Formula?

I assume so.. it was loaded in a 45-70.. I am just curious what other people have loaded it in that is a straight wall case and what powders where used. I don't have a ton of experience with straight wall cases.. they Seem like they are alot easier however that is why I am asking.

means people didn't have a gun capable of handling it, rifling couldn't stablilize it, or there body couldn't take it.

There was no published data on what it was like to walk on the moon when it happened the first time. If you haven't figured out I like to think outside the box and not be like everyone else. I will not shoot the big cast alot. Just here and there. mainly I will do 405 or 300. but I would like to have a big one because I can.. :)

I can shoot that in a 460 S&W case which is WAY smaller than a 458 win mag. Takes me 20 grains of powder to spin up to 930 fps in a 10" barrel. And I have tons of upward mobility (just not needed in my case!)

So, plenty of space in a 458 win mag case for sure.

4198. I don't know if that is suitable for 458 win mag or not. you have ALOT more case space than I do. a lot.

I have IMR 4198. I do not have H4198.. and that is what I was going to try

I use IMR. Tried H, but liked IMR better.

Ask your mold maker if he has data.

I can go up to 720 gr. I have some data produced by Ranger Rick's of Alaska when he was still in biz. He published data for the 45-70, 458 Win and 458 Lott. I am pretty sure I can lay my hands on it. I have shot a bunch of the 720 gr WFNGC from Ranger Ricks in the 458 Lott. At around 1900 fps, QL estimates around 91 ftlb of recoil. Get ready. The good news is a bullet that heavy doesn't accelerate that quickly so the recoil impulse isn't sharp--it's still heavy though. Don't kid yourself.

That's the 720 gr I am speaking of on the right. The Pb is not terribly hard. Recovered boolits from wet sand have expanded to half-dollar diameter and still have 1 inch of shank. I can't wait to kill something with it!! BTW that little bullet in the middle is a 400 gr Speer JFN.

Where did you get your mold? What does the boolit look like?

458-645-GC, #351 from NEI. and Whiterabbit has a pic of it on another post

moose if you do a search here you should find data, seems like someone was getting 720 grainers moving out at 1900 fps in 458 WM using H335. It's been a couple years but know I read it here.

really.. hmm.. I have problems with the search menu on here. I search 458 and it comes up with nothing.. so I don't know what is going on. anything I type in the search menu gives me nothing.. I have to read every post.. and I kept looking and looking and just thought I would ask.. But thank you.. H335 is one I don't have that I have thought about.

Moose, try this:
https://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=001951264366462437169:ggn3vg-bjum
It'll search better than the native function.
