This is the current list for the small hammer mold, as best I can tell. I will be sending PMs to those on this list to make sure they are still interested and get their shipping address for when it's their turn. As the mold makes it's rounds, and as new requests come in, I will update the list.

This is a site benefit item, a donation of $5.00 is encouraged to help pay for the site. There is a donation link for Gunloads at the bottom of each page. Each user is responsible for shipping costs to the next in line also.

Let's shoot for a maximum of 2 weeks for each user, then pass it along. As you pass the mold on, or recieve it, please send me a PM so I can keep this page up to date.

45nut,
Would you kindly place my name on the list for the small hammer mould. I agree to receive it, use it, and pass it on quickly. If I run into any questions, I'll send you a note.

First question: What is generally the best handlestock to have on hand before it arrives?

Should we clear the tracking system and move this list to it? We could if you'd like.

alamogunr shipped the mold on to me yesterday. I will edit this post as soon as I get it.
Wiljen, I would be more than happy to add all of the people from the large hammer mold list to this one. Some of them are already on this list, so I wouldn't duplicate them. I know it will not seem fair to a lot of folks, but considering the circumstances, it's the best we can do for now.
Here is the list and the current status if we add all the other names:

Whether we move it to the group buy tracking system or not, I would still be willing to be the "human element" in keeping the hammer mold moving as smoothly as we can. Starting with PMs to all of those that are now on this list. Let me know what you and 45nut come up with!!

Thanks guys!

I hope that he can sleep at night. But then his kind do not have a consience. Just the thought of loosing the chance to view this site or have so many people see his name on the wall of SHAME for a used mould that would not cost $75.00 new boggles my mind. BWB:castmine:

Since I currently have the hammer mould, I thought I would post some pictures of what I am doing with it. I have found out that it is kind of temperamental - for me anyway. I had to remelt several hammers that didn't fill out, and I ended up keeping a few that were not real pretty, but will work! The lead that I used was from some sheet lead and lead pipe that I just bought from a local guy that had collected it to use in his muzzleloaders. It's really soft stuff. I decided to use pipe and pipe fittings for the handles, so that I can remove the handle when the head is beat to uselessness and just replace it with a new head. The 3/8" x 8" pipe nipple cost $2.98, the 3/8" caps were $0.62, and the 1/2" x 3/8" bushings were $0.84. Both the caps and bushings seemed to work as well for the pipe nipple to screw into, but time will tell which holds up. I did have to put a 30-30 case into the pipe nipple between it and the bushing to keep lead from running down my arm when I poured the heads that used the bushing instead of the cap!![smilie=1:
You'll also see in the pictures that I used a 1/2" pipe and 3/8" to 1/2" adapter to keep my GLOVED hands a little further back from the mould and the heat!

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m9/obssd1958/shooting/100_6572a.jpg

Melting down the lead pipe. You see the 3/8" x 1/2" bushing on the left, and the 3/8" cap on the right. The nipple with a fitting on it is locked into the hammer mould and ready to fill when the lead is ready.

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m9/obssd1958/shooting/100_6573a.jpg

Lead is fluxed, cleaned and ready to pour (or scoop)!

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m9/obssd1958/shooting/100_6575a.jpg

Production for today showing both an 8" pipe nipple and a 10" pipe nipple used for handles.

I should be ready to ship this on to R.M. by the end of next weekend.

Take care!

I used the plumbing fittings also, and I found that heating the mold in the pot helped fillout. Unfortunately the pipe doesn't fill the mould hole completely so you get some flashing, but it breaks off easily enough

Hey Pumpguy, how are you making out? I know it must be way too late now, but I forgot to tell you how I plugged the ends of the pipe. I flared .45 ACP brass larger than the pipe, then forced them into the pipe. Seemed to work OK for me.

Hey Pumpguy. Have you done anything with the hammer mold? I would say that if you haven't, you'd be best to send it on. You've had it for 2 months. I would think that's more than enough time. There's a long list of guys lined up behind you that would like to use it.

pumpguy
05-12-2008, 07:32 PM
Well, I tried to use it this weekend. When I tightened up the screw on the c-clamp, I broke the clamp in two!! No tools and I did not tighten it that tight. I will get it fixed and send it on. Sorry I have had it for so long. I got five new accounts since March and time has just gotten away from me.

Sorry I have had it for so long. I got five new accounts since March and time has just gotten away from me.

I never used the clamp anyway. If this is the mould I donated to the forum, I just used Vice Grips to clamp the two mould halves together by clamping the bowls together. I never trusted that small clamp, was always scared it was going to break. I am not surprised that it broke.

If I had to do it all over again, I would just use vice grips since the vice grips create an ideal handle to hold the mould while you pour lead.

Also, I'll say it again, the mould works best if the mould section is preheated a bit. Not as much as you would prehead a bullet mould. The bowl for the metal should be preheated also, especially the feed hole at the end of the bowl, as you want the molten metal to flow in unimpeded.

I have sent both PMs and e-mail to woodman51jfk since the mould was to change hands in May. I have not received any replies from him. He last visited this site on 05-08-2008 06:43 AM.
I looked him up online and called the phone number listed. I left a message, so if it's the right number and person, and if he calls me back, I'll report back here.

725
08-11-2008, 05:11 AM
So, what's the bottom line? Has this mould disappeared off in the vapors? If I'm reading this right, it's been 3 months AWOL. .................and I was getting so close!

45nut
08-11-2008, 08:45 AM
Well,,
I just sent woodman51jfk a email requesting the status, the address he provided is Kempner TX, not far from one of our members so maybe we can get a roll-by.

This is the reason I am not eager to ship out the hammer mold Red River Rick made us without a formal agreement of ownership and responsibility and a significant deposit. This RRR mold would not be replaceable and I have no intention of just letting it vanish into someones bench drawer.

I WILL make a set of hammers for anyone if they send me lead and a token amount for my labor and electric cost and will make them in batches.

I have a few handle sets available but if you provide your own I would be happy to use them as well.

725
08-11-2008, 07:16 PM
I will happily forgo the honor of making my own if you would make me one or two. I'll send a PM. Seems like I've been on the list forever.

Hi Guys........just got off the phone with TXRebel, who says there's a lynching party headed my way:eek: lookin' to get a mould................I hate to burst any bubbles, but I never received the mould. I haven't been on the site for quite some time, or I certainly would have responded sooner.
If it was sent UPS, get them tracking it.....while I check with the next ranch over.............UPS has a bad habit of dropping my stuff there, since it's easier to find I guess.
Is this the same mould that Medic 44 had last year?? Not that it matters if it's AWOL again!
I'll let y'all know the results tomorrow after I check with the neighbors..........
crap.....I'm never gonna get to make any hammers!!!

updated email is kinda important! :)

No, Medic44 got the large hammer mold, this was a smaller one.

No lynching either John, I do hope the mold is at a neighbors though.
I am glad you signed in to straighten it out, I did see you were in on several buys so I did figure you would be by soon. Easier to straighten out with a phone call and much quicker.

woodman51jfk
08-12-2008, 03:58 PM
bad news from neighbors............no mould on either side ( 2703 & 2731 ), but there was a rather weatherbeaten portable DVD player ( el cheapo "award" type ) that had been deposited by the tractor shed across the pasture some time ago......obliterated address label from weather......sorry guys.
I'm inclined to agree with the deposit/confirmation of shipping-receipt idea.......this is too many cool things floating around in the ether..........mebbe we can map out a member location route & we meet each other half way to trade stuff..........forwarding is geographical instead of chronological??

pumpguy
08-12-2008, 04:40 PM
Well, this just SUCKS! I sent it in the same brown box that I received it from R.M. in. I sent it from the post office and did not get a tracking number. I have sent countless item this way and never had a problem that I thought would neccessitate tracking numbers. Woodman, is there anywhere else they would have left it or could the post office still have it?

woodman51jfk
08-12-2008, 06:40 PM
Nowhere else that I am aware of.........you say it was USPS, I had thought it was UPS, which has mis delivered repeatedly, while the rural carrier typically will leave packages on the porch, unless it's too nasty to drive back to the house, then they are left under the mailbox, I'll go into town tomorrow & check the post office to see if it's laying around in there. When was it sent, and from what zip code? ........maybe that info will help them some.......I'll also check with our courier to see if he or anyone running his route around the time of shipment knows anything.........unfortunately now I'm even less optimistic, not having real good results with some rural carriers.........definitely not on my list of good reasons to live in the boonies.....results of query tomorrow.........

pumpguy
08-12-2008, 08:39 PM
I shipped it on or around the 20th of May from zip code 80134. I had my return address on it so I would have thought they would have sent it back to me if they couldn't deliver it to you. Hopefully, they will have it or know where it went. I hear ya on the rural carriers. When I lived in Kansas it seemed the only thing the lady carrying the mail could get in the box was the front end of her car.

woodman51jfk

This ain't none o' my business 'cause I've never had the mold nor asked for it. I just want to make a suggestion.

Some years back, I got into muzzle loading. I made a brass ramrod for my rifle. I posted about it and another guy wanted one. I made one and shipped it to him via UPS. The shipping tube showed up with one end missing and the rod was gone. I made another one and insured it for $500 as a custom made machine part. Sure enough, they lost that one, too. By the way, THEY packed it. The guy I shipped it to made them sign a document acknowledging he received only an empty tube.

I not only stuck it in 'em, I BROKE it off in 'em. Cost 'em $500. I made ANOTHER one and shipped it insured for another $500. The lady marked the tube in big, bold letters "INSURED FOR $500". He got it.

I'm not suggesting anybody has intentionally kept the mold. But, if the mold really was shipped and had been insured for a rediculous amount of money, that might have made a difference.

By the way, UPS has no right to demand knowing what's in the package and the shipper has the right to insure a penny for a thousand bucks if he wants to.

Not tryin' to get in anybody's business, just tryin' to help.
