View Full Version : Has anyone tried 358315 in a .358 Hawkeye yet?

I'm considering the purchase of a Lyman 358315 for my Hawkeye.

Thanks,

Since nobody has chimed in yet on this topic, how 'bout another:

What boolits have been found to work well in the .358 Ruger Hawkeye at beyond 2000 fps? I worked with SAECO #352 at beyond 2000 fps and pretty much gave up trying to shoot less than 2MOA. Perhaps an alloy way harder than I care to cast will shoot well from this rifle's 12" twist but I'm wondering how the lighter boolits like SAECO #356, RCBS 35-200-FN and Lyman 358315 will do. After I run a batch of WW metal through my Whelen, I think I'll try RCBS 35-200-FN in the Hawkeye, but I don't currently own a SAECO #356 or a Lyman 358315.

My Win. 94AE in .356 shoots the 250 gr. Saeco(sorry, can't remember the #) beautifully, I can't imagine a more accurate bullet(in my gun). It is a flat point GC bullet that i cast out of 50% Monotype/50% pure lead.

MT Chambers,

Load spec's and rate of twist would be appreciated. That same boolit shoots very well in my 16" twist Ballard rifled 336A past 2000 fps with AA2520 and a BHN 14 to 15 boolit. DP-74 breaks 2100 with good accuracy but more testing needs to be done. I wish I had a scoped .35 Remington these day 'cause my eyes are migrating to the far side of 50.

The 356 Win AE's have a 12" twist. Mine shoots the Saeco 352 very nicely at 2100 FPS with water dropped wheel weight. It turns into a shotgun at that velocity with air cooled wheel weight.

Trailblazer,

Your results are commensurate with mine achieved in the 12" twist Hawkeye. I suspect your water dropped wheel weight boolits are 20+ BHN.

MJ, I don't have a hardness tester so your guess is better than mine. I do wonder if a better lube would help the air cooled wheel weights get over 2000 FPS. When I tried it, the first half of the bore looked good as near as I could see when looking down the muzzle. The last half was leaded. Makes me wonder if there is a better lube that would get them through the whole 20" barrel without leading?

I don't know, but under "normal" conditions the plain as mud Javelina Lube does a good job in a 16" twist well beyond 2000 fps. I don't know why anyone would need a 12" twist in the .35 bore for cast boolits and I'm hoping my 14" twist Whelen will turn out to be as accurate as my 16" twist 336 with 150 to 220 grain bullets.

My guess would be to try a stiffer lube with enough oil in it to provide adequate lubrication.

Tell me about the Whelen? I have a Shilen 14 twist 35 Whelen barrel on its way. It is threaded for a 98 Mauser. I have what looks like an old Bishop stock and a Redfield receiver sight. Don't know when I will get it together but I will soon have all the pieces.

I have a 16" twist Whelen which is a Handi-Rifle that I am trying to find the right load combinations for... in fact I'll be shooting some rounds through it tomorrow. My 14" twist Whelen is just an Encore barrel right now but after closely examining it tonight I discovered the chamber is virtually the same as the H-R but it appears to have 8 grooves. I may send the barrel back to Midway for a refund 'cause there's not enough difference in the two chambers to make it worth my time (I don't own an Encore frame).
