What do you think of using the 300 grain lee with 15 grains of AA 9 powder in a rossi 45 colt lever gun? Thanks Kurt

I think you are right at the top of the load chart, I'd back off a tick [13.5 or so] and use the 15grs as a maximum.

Depends on how much recoil you wanna deal with. I tried 15gr once and liked it. This is their old +P data that was loaded pretty low.

13.5 to 15gr #9, 905fps, 17,600 psi. Comfortable to shoot in my Ruger.

The new official load data is loaded up to 30,000k psi to compete with hodgdon's data using H110/Win296. Its more recoil than I needed so didn't try it but its as follows.

16gr to 18.8gr of #9, 1281 fps @ 29,023 psi. Warning! This data is free from Accurate, download it and check all data before using it.

Oh one more thing, while Accurate #9 is much more forgiving of downloading than most magnum powders it is STILL a magnum powder that WILL fail to ignite and burn probably if loaded to low. 15gr under my 300gr Lee worked great and burned clean.

However I tried a light load (not sure how low as my load notes are at home) under a 250gr boolit and got 2 misfires back to back. The first barely made it out the barrel, the second did not. They left my guns barrel, cylinders, and action choked with sandy gritty stuff. It literally looked like I had just poured a handfull of nasty beach sand into my gun.

Now this start load was very close to the start loads listed in my Lee book, think maybe a tenth or two off as that was the closest my Lee Autodisk would drop to the start load. So don't think I was doing some super light load I came up with on my own. I learned that while #9 is very downloadable it is still a magnum powder and should be treated as such.

I use a 285 gr. GC with 18 gr. of AA9. This gives me 1400 fps in a 16" Winchester 94. Good accuracy at 50 yrds. and enough recoil to be interesting.
