Is the flat black powdercoat abrasive?

I find that the flat black looks the best. Is this color strong enough and not abrasive to the barrel?

It seems to me that a high gloss black would be more resistant and "glide" easier.

Opinions? I am about to buy a pound and dry tumble. I hate lubes, and I hate leading.

Their black magic looks quite durable, but is it worth twice the price over the satin black? opinions?

They have this satin black

To the best of my knowledge the only black powder that's been accused on being abrasive is the Harbor Freight powder. It also seems as if the newer HF black canisters may not contain the abrasive anymore.

At $4-$6 per pound, I'm reminded that I need to swing by the HF store and grab some more. A little abrasive might do some of my barrels some good!

I like em and I shop online with them, but they really have an aggressive marketing dept.

Didn't know that. I have a store right down the road from me - I may stop by on the way back from church this afternoon and see if there's any powder on the shelves - but I have a policy that when I buy something and they ask for my name, address, phone, email, etc, I always decline. So their marketing doesn't bother me - but it would. I get enough junk mail and email already.

is applicating with the gun worth it or just a hassle and dry tumble is less trouble?

The ES gun is absolutely worth it.

Both shoot equally well in my tests. My gun, targets and chrony don't know the difference. Spray once and bake once and you'll get a nice slick coat. Tumble twice and bake twice and you'll get a little more of a matte finish, but they'll shoot just as good.:-D
I have not been able to achieve 100% coverage with one tumble and bake, but some have said they do it.

Sprayed on left, tumbled on right.

Closer up... in this one, tumbled is on left, sprayed is on right:

Depends on what you are after. If a mirror smooth, attractive finish, then yes. If slightly less than that, then no. Both shoot equally as well.

is one coat of tumble enough to prevent leading?

Oh well, I will be ordering the HF gun online and bought 3 pounds of high gloss black from a canadian powder retailer (cheaper and faster shipping, less hassle).

The other more expensive black was also matte, and I would prefer a gloss to reduce abrasiveness.
Plus, this one is less expensive.

MIDNIGHT BLACK

A HIGH GLOSS POWDER THIS POLYESTER TGIC BLACK HAS BECOME THE GO TO BLACK FOR CUSTOM COATERS.

CURE SCHEDULE IS 380 F FOR 15 MIN (PMT)

So, how do I tell if the flat back I have is abrasive or not?

Beagle333

You'll like the gun. It isn't any hassle, as most just stand the boolits directly on some non-stick foil and are really happy with them. They might not shoot any better, but they'll definitely look better. And..... you only use one coat for perfect coverage every time.

I think Bangerjim had the most definitive thread on abrasive or not abrasive on the black...

Read the stickies. That has been cussed and discussed far tooooooo many times!

I use HF matte black wit no problems. It will NOT "eat your gun alive!"

Good job, you know I need that instant gratification :drinks:

Really though, I'd read that, I was wondering if there was a way to check before pc'ing...I still haven't started messing with the powdercoat, just have all the tools laying around and was curious about it when I read this thread.

oh well, no matte black for me. I prefer to make sure it's smooth. I'll post some pics when I have done a few, but it wont be before a few weeks I guess, until I get the gun and have some time to coat.

It is for my .45.

I'm testing currently for my 9mm.

When you powdercoat with the gun how do you coat the underside of the bullet? Is it needed?

Beagle333

I put mine up on little hex nuts that are under my foil, so it gets a little wrap-around effect from the powder. But that is just to make sure the sides are coated all the way down. It doesn't need coated on the bottom. It is a 1/1000" thin layer of polyester that provides friction protection to the sides. It does nothing to fire protect the base, even if it were coated down there.8-)

Conventionally lubed boolits are nekkid from the bottom of the lube groove all the way down and including the base and shoot great. :-D
The lube does nothing to protect the base of those, because no protection is needed.

As covered many times before, you do not need to worry about coating the bottoms. Standard lube offers no protection to the bottoms. The only thing we concern ourselves with is the tops of the grease grooves where they contact the rifling in the barrel.

If you are shooting fast sonic boolits, you should be using GC's slugs anyway. PC will not protect the bottom of your boolits like a Cu GC. That is what I use. Sub-sonic loads do not need GC's or protection on the bottoms.

Those MiHec 45-270-SAA's are awesome, aren't they?:-D
They lend themselves to PC'ing well too... it's just like a big magnet to the powder.
