I got the CVA in line on a lark. Used but good shape and cheap. I have no interest in sabots. I have a Lee .515-450 that seems to fit ok, haven't tried it. And also Lee REAL 250s, round balls, and a TC Maxi Ball, all .50 cal. Suggestions? I got it for a novelty so odd loads are a possibility. I've shot muzzle loaders for so long the idea of a removable breech seems strange.

read everything you can that idaho ron and others put on cast bullets for paperpatching your 1/28 cva. you may get hooked like the rest of us and be a lot more independent of the commercial bullet co/s
.

Which CVA is it, the OPtima and wolf type breakdown will shoot about anything, but designed for powerbelts. They will shoot a TC maxi hunter or great plains type 350-385 good with 90-95gr 2ffg, BP.

It's a 'Kodiak Magnum', .50 cal., 1/28" twist.

I am experimenting with different bullets too in my Optima Pro. I've just started by using my 45ACP lead bullets (Lee TL452-230-TC) in T/C sabots and they shoot real good out to 100 yards. I just got a Lee 250g REAL mold and will start experimenting with those. What powder are you using? My favorite is Blakhorn 209. That stuff is as clean as smokeless, but I have also had some fun with Alliant Black MZ which is half the cost. Both are readily available at Sportsman's Warehouse in Rocklin.

My wife has the same ML, Kodiak is a clone of TC Omega. Again, they were designed to shoot the Powerbelt bullets. I put a new Nikon Pro staff 3x9x40, weaver bases, Millet steel weaver type rings on the one I bought used, in excellent condition for the wife. It took 6 shots, with 2ffg Goex to zero at 25 then 100yds. I then shot a 3 shot group, with all 3 shots cutting into each other at 100yds, wiping with a damp spit patch between shots and was done. Wife has shot 3 shots since then, 75, 90, and 147 yds, 3 dead deer!

370 gr Maxi Ball does pretty good in my 50's, both my New Englander with 1:48 twist and my Black Mountain Magnum with 1:28 twist. I use 90 or 100 gr of Pyrodex RS. Kinda kills at both ends though, and drops like a mortar round past 125 yards. I also use .45 cal Hornady 300 gr XTP's in Harvester EZ Load sabots over the same powder and can realistically shoot to 200 yards out of the Black Mountain.

It's a 'Kodiak Magnum', .50 cal., 1/28" twist.

I use a soft Lyman 429667, MMP green sabot, 2-3 50gn pellets of 777. I know its not real muzzleloading , but it works. And cheaper than sending XTP's out.
