The pic shows a 6.8mm SPC with a 287346 (7mm) seated to just touch the rifling of a T/C Carbine 23" barrel...
(A rifling mark can be seen on the seated boolit)

The 287346 has been sized down to 0.278" and I do shoot it in several 270 Winchesters that I own...

As can be seen in the pic, the seating depth is much below the shoulder because of the diameter of the front of the boolit...

Will this work, or is it not a good idea because the base of the boolit is greatly below the base of the neck?...

Thanks...BCB

How secure is the gas check when crimped to the gas check shank?

Its tight as it is a 7mm check sized down to 0.278"...

So long as the gas check is on there solidly, I wouldn't worry. As always, work up an appropriate load.

Why is there lube in your "crimp groove" on the seated bullet? A very gorgeous boolit by the way.

I've experienced no problems that I could attribute to the deep seating of a bullet. Crimped-on gas checks are a must as has already been pointed out. This question comes up regularly and a search might turn up a good bit of information.

I'd be interested in knowing how they shoot. I picked up a contender with a 23" stainless 6.8 Remington last week. Mainly bought it for the stainless contender action. Trying to decide if the 6.8 Rem barrel is something that I want to keep or sell.

So far I have done almost no shooting of cast boolits…

I did use the 280642 as a loaded round to push the loaded cartridge into the rifling and fireform the case—I was having many misfires with the factory Remington brass…

I did shoot a group—mostly as an aim point—at 75 yard and it was very impressive to say the least. I was using 6.0 grains of Trail Boss…

Back to the 6.8mm. I have been shooting jacketed bullets as that is sort of what I got the barrel for—although cast are not out of the question…

The 90 grain Sierra HP are my best shooting bullet so far. I have shoot 100 grain Hornady with acceptable results. I want to shoot heavier, but I don’t know if this well work well or not. Although there is data available up to 140-grain bullets…

The 90 grainers are good out to 300 yards. I will try to post a couple of pics of the steel target (~5”x11”) I shoot at various ranges. I was experimenting with the holdover marks on the ‘scope…

The problem with jacketed and then cast or vis-a-versa is the P.O.I. differences. The 90 grains are 2678 fps and the 280642’s are at 1013 fps. I don’t care to do the ‘scope adjustment dance with each slug…

I suspect you have a good buck in your setup. The 6.8mm is a neat critter, but how neat I can’t say at his point in time…

I’m hopeful though…

Hopefully the pics posted O.K….

Good-luck…BCB

I have a 7x6.8 I really enjoy the 21" bbl lets me drive an RCBS 27-130FP PP'd up to 2400fps 2250 however is the accuracy speed limit w/ RL 10x. I finally got it to go sub-sonic w/3.5gr of Unique under a NOE 287-150 Hunter. With it zero'd at 100 the 27-130FP at 2250 needed about 32'' of hold over at 417yd but it was as easy as using the duplex shoulder for the aiming point instead of the cross hair. I enjoy mine very much.
