I had a coworker tell me that he would load pellets into primed .17 Remington brass and shoot them in his basement. I do know a primer will send the plastic bullets from Speer out the end of a .44 mag, but I'm not sure a .177 pellet would go thru a .172 bore that is 24" long. I never did see this done but HE swore to it. I was just looking at the .17 and remembered those comments. It is cold and wet outside now,so maybe I'm looking for some thing other than an air rifle or plastic bullets to hold me over till spring!

Aguila Colibrí are primer powered .22's
come in both regular and super versions.
I've shot both out of rifles and never had a problem with a bullet stuck in the bore, altough the website warns only shoot the super from rifles.
don't ask me how many bricks of this stuff I go through.
I have an outers trap in my basement. Great winter fun.:-D

They're swaged from very soft lead, and are generally hollow. They swage down to the barrel's dimensions as they enter the rifling and fit it perfectly after that. (As do cast and jacketed bullets that start off oversize.)

The problem is that primer residue builds up in the bore and after a couple of rounds the pellets will jam. I found this both with .22 pellets in my .223 and those Speer plastic bullets in .44 mag. A partial solution is to convert the cases to shotgun primers.

I'm looking for speeds LESS than 1000 fps(so I can use my regular back stop) and shoot in my basement which is less than 50 feet long.!

How about an air rifle?

Ditto, what Ricochet said!

I went one better and made an adapter to shoot 22 pellets from my 45-70. The insert device was made from a 22 liner cut off and had a 3" rifled tube mounted to center in the bore with a brass case. It was fun to play with but provided no improvment over rb gallery loads. DON'T use a shotgun primer with skirted pellets as the hotter s/g primers blow off the skirts.
At 50 feet accuracy went under 1" with the adapter.

I fill the hollow base with SG lube and that seems to solve the fouling problem.

I pulled a can of empty .17 brass out and a box of pellets. HOW do you get the pellet in the case neck?? It wont fit! Maybe I'll have to try an UN sized case. I have several air guns, pistol and rifles, but I'd like to practice with the .17 as IT fits me better. Also ,I have a 223 and 22-250 in the same model. It was just a thought for winter fun!
