View Full Version : Has anyone tried coating a JACKETED bullet?

I am totally expecting to get flamed for this question. But, I can think of several reasons to coat one, if it will work. Think of the benefit of no copper fouling. Now, concentricity might be a different story...

I always brush with Hoppes #9 or Hoppe's Elite. That's just the way I was raised, and I've never had an issue with copper. 8-)

I have... won't do it again...

I used Hi-Tek coating on some brass-jacketed 357 handgun bullets. I hoped for the lubricity of the coating to help coax the bullet through my 358 die on my Star sizer. BARELY got the bullet through the die; flexed the heck out of the Star, so I won't be doing that again. I think the problem is that the jacket is way harder than lead, so it wouldn't yield when the coating made the diameter oversize for the die. Jacket is soft enough to be used in a bore, obviously, but nowhere near as soft as lead. So the low pressure of the sizer just couldn't overcome the jacket strength when resizing.

Ive tumbled in moly before but see no reason what so ever to PC bullets.

A commercial caster in OZ was playing with copper plating. he had a few failures and decided to HI-TEK coat them. they worked great and he than tried coating jacketed just to see how it would work. Same result. clean barrels and accurate as well.
I still have a box of his 9mm 130gr RN plated and coated laying around.

I coat sort of...I use Tubb's boron nitride kit from his web site. It's super easy to use and boron nitride doesn't come with the issues or concerns that moly does. Check it out: http://www.davidtubb.com/boron-nitride-coating-bullets

Probably should have mentioned or been more specific that I was asking about ESPC. I tend to assume everyone knows what I'm thinking, guess I spend too much time with my wife, and it's rubbing off!

I wonder if HBN would work the same as applying moly...?
