Has anyone worked with the .250 Savage with cast boolits? I have a Remington 700 that is superbly accurate with 100 grain Hornadys and kinda had an itch to try it with Lyman 257312 and 257463. My 99 will be next if the Remington shows promise. Should make an excellent small game getter and I won't drain my pot so quickly when making plinking/target loads. -JDL

Shuz is your man. He just sold a old .250 and bought a NIB .250. Hopefully he'll see this and post./beagle

JDL, I recently acquired a 250/3000 barreled P-17. I have gotten great results using 3 different moulds,
Lyman 257464 and the Saeco #257 are delivering great hundred yard groups with using 18 Gr of 4895 pull down powder. An even cheaper shoot and almost as accurate is the Lyman 257283 with 5.5 grains of Unigue behind it. All casting is done in straight wheel weight and air-cooled bullets.

Hope this helps,

I use a Herters 100gr GC Spitzer in my 257 Roberts over 7 gr of Red Dot with decent groups at 50 and 100 yards. It's a definite and proven rabbit whacker. Sorry it's not a 250 savage but the bullet weight matches up to what you are looking for.

Is that a Herter's copy of Lyman 257418?
A heartfelt thanks for serving!!! -JDL

JDL--I currently have a .250 Sav in a Ruger 77, and a NIB Rem 700 Classic that I just acquired at the last gun show. I have shot cast boolits for about 20 years in the .250 Sav, and wore out my first Rem 700 Classic last spring. I found my most accurate loads used 100g (nominal) boolits using powders IMR and surplus 4759 and AA5744. I'm looking forword to trying to wring the accuracy outta my latest acquision. My boolit is a long discontinued Cramer 55A, altho I once owned an RCBS 100g and it shot well. I have the RCBS 120g boolit, but so far, have not gotten it to shoot as well as the Cramer. Lyman's 257464 never did shoot well in my old 700 Classic but as you have read, it has done well for others. Good luck in your quest.
By the way, my 10 year old grandson took his first deer this past fall using the Cramer boolit outta the .250 Sav Ruger.--Shuz

Shuz, What does that Cramer look like? Please give us the details on your grandson's deer, load, distance, etc.

I think I've found a problem with my 700 Classic in that the chamber is very tight. Boolits sized .258" will not go into the unsized cases by finger pressure and a .257" jacketed fits very snug (a Sierra 100 grain will not fall free when turned down). I think I will have to use my Savage 99 as the chamber is slightly larger and an unsized case will, just bearly, accept a .259" boollit. -JDL

JDL,A load that works well in my 250 is 14.0 grs of H-116.Last 5 shot group at 100 meters was .510.The same 14 to 16 grains of 4198 works well with this bullet ,a Lyman 92 gr.

JDL-The Cramer 55A is a round nosed boolit with 2 normal grease grooves as well as the small space ahead of the gas check. It's length is .83". It kinda resembles a .30 cal Lyman 311291 that has been soaked in alum until it shrunk to .25! Don't give up on your Remington. You may wanna consider a chamber cast to see what neck dimensions you could turn your brass to. IMR and surplus 4759 have given me 5 shot groups as low as .483" @ 100 yds. Load was 14.0g. My boolits were cast from 3:1 alloy(ww:lino) and sized to .2584. I hasten to add that just sub 1" groups were the norm until the bbl throat wore out after about 15 years of CBA matches. I have no idea how much the gun was fired before I bought it. I'm looking forward to starting over with load development with my NIB 700 Classic .250 Sav. If you wanna try some Cramer's send me a PM.--Shuz

Sized diameter should read .2594

Grandson's deer was a large doe shot at about 35 yds from a rest on the downstairs deck. (We live in the woods). Hit behind the shoulder and ran about 25 yds and collapsed. Boolit was the Cramer 55A with 14.0g mil surp 4759. Boolit was not recovered, passed on thru. Gun was the Ruger 77 in .250 Sav with a 3x9 scope. Mighty tasty and best of all.. real short drag.

Shuz,
I have/had a 200th anniversity Ruger 77 in 250 Savage that I gave to my older son when he entered high school. I think that's the sweetest shooting deer rifle I ever owned. He's killed at least 10 deer with it and has kept it in pristine condition.

Had one of those. Mine had a very sloppy chamber. Sold it, kept the Savage 99, never regretted it.

Savage 99. Shot my first Blacktail with it this year. 100gr Interlock at 3,100FPs. And ask my nephew about accuracy on ground squirrles at 20-250yds with 87gr TNTs! Those thinngs make my 22-250 explosion look mediocre.
