Hi guys I have never pushed more than a 205 grain cast bullet through my BLR 358. looking through a couple of reloading manuals the largest bullet listed in the 358 Win is a 250 grainer. I have the opurtunity to buy a 275 grain CBE mold very reasonably.

Does anyone shoot slugs that large out of there 358 Win?

250 is the heaviest I tried - I'd start with 30 grains of 4895 and work up
38 grains was Max on mine with 250 grain - I got a 358009 NOE mold that's around 280 grains but haven't used it yet.

How does yours fit in the magazine?

found one load listed for heavier
http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/showthread.php/116768-275-grain-Woodleigh-Protected-Point-358-Winchester-range-results
and
http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/2185747/1 - they even went larger at least on paper.
A 310gr Woodleigh should theoretically push 2000fps (QL data) from a 358Win, but wont stabilise in a 1:14" twisted barrel.

Another Load pushing the 250 grain Speer Grand Slam at 2400 fps
with 44 grains of AA2015

I haven't bought the mold yet, but its $20 dollars andn CBE mold are top quality $99 new!
I have some reservations myself as to the OAL! The projectile is 1.130" long

This is a drawing of the projectile:

Yes, we have a custom design at about 270gn depending on the alloy used. I have used it in 357 Herrett, 35 Rem, 358Win, 35 Whelen and Ackley Whelen, 350 Rem Mag, and 358 Norma Mag.
I have also used the old Lyman 280gn RNGC in the 358 but in a bolt action not a lever action.
The Lyman as well a an early group buy 280gn Bator design have long parallel sides so unless deep seated can cause chambering issues in some rifles. I have solved that issue by nose sizing the lead couple drive bands to .350' to .351" to get that portion to ride the lands and give no engraving resistance on chambering.
I don't know what the CBE design is but in my custom design that we sell from our shop I designed it with a gentle taper so it fits well in a verity of chamber dimensions.

Do you have a photo or drawing of the mold or projectile?

I have a 285g made by Mountain Molds that I use in my Whelen. When I saw how much of the boolit would be inside the case I never tried loading it in the 358.

My Son used this one from a 35 Whelen Ackley to take a 50" moose. 2400 fps MV, 175 yards, DRT.
This design was so successful in 35 cal that I duplicated it in 375 cal. The 375 cal weighs 365gn in a hard alloy.

I have been assembling pieces and parts with the notion of building a little Mannlicher stocked carbine in 358 Win before hunting season this fall. Got a sweet commercial YUGO 48 action, found dies and some brass here a couple months ago, a seasoned blank, and am negotiating on a new barrel on another forum.

I have been looking at the NOE copy of the RCBS 35 Rem boolit mold, but the 358009 or the Bullshop heavy might be a better choice for 200yds or closer.

Any thoughts anyone...?

I can look up my data for the 358 Win. I should have something recorded for both my custom and the Lyman 358009 and possibly the Lee Bator 280gn.
Remember if you find a Lyman 358009 or copy and run into length issues all is not lost. The nose sizing to .350"/ .351" solved it nicely for me.
I had those dies on hand as I use them for sizing boolits for the 348 Winchester for which I have several boolit designs.

The 200gn RCBS is really pleanty of boolit for the smaller short action cartriges like the 358 and 35 Remington. There is nothing it wont handle, less lead usage, and in the shorter cases, lower pressures and higher case capacity. I tried a Texas heart shot on a moose about ten years ago with that boolit from a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington and it tore stuff up pretty bad on him. I wouldnt hesitate to shoot anything roaming around here is Texas with that boolit.

Jr. your killin my business! Your supposed to back me up on the superiority of our custom design. I better mention at this point that we do sell the RCBS 200gn boolit too. Cant deny either that both boolits were effective on moose.
Now if Jr. could just learn to shoot at the other end of critters and forget them Taxas heart shots.

To try and answer the OP's question...ahem. I've been researching this a bit myself. Below is what I've come up with. I just got my 358009 Accurate clones loaded up over 10gr of unique to fireform new brass to a new gun. I will then start with load development. I haven't shot the heavies yet, but I'm raring to go.

For me the all time finest heavy weight .358 cast bullet is the Lyman..#3589. It has been renumbered no doubt to something like 358009.
But that doesn’t change the fact that at 290 grains with #2 lead, heat treated to 20 BNH or so...and the nose de-tempered as I described,
you have a cast bullet that will kill 90%+ of all the game on earth! It has the distinction of being one of the few of the first bullets ever offered
when Ideal Company started in 1895...and still in the line. It’s still a winner because it delivers.
20 grains of 2400 under this 290 grainer will break 1500 fps for near 1500 ft. lbs of muzzle punch. Yet it is an easy load with around 10 lbs of recoil.
10 grns of Unique will go around 1250 fps and near 1000 lbs of energy, again a fine training load or just for woods loafing, yet it can easily knock over a deer
or black bear...it’s in the 41 magnum range of power...why not? For a full hunting load 48grns/Acc 2520/2400 fps and 3700 ft.lbs. of muzzle energy.
This is a top load and it has to be worked up to carefully.
The best medium load I found in both the 356 and the 358, with this bullet is 22 to 23 grains of 2400
for near 1800 fps...accuracy with 2400 is superb with many of the heavy bullets in the 356/358 cases.

Some time ago, Wally Bator designed a pair of custom molds for the .35 bore size. The one I favor for my hunting
purposes, is the “Bator Heavy”, a designated 250 grain bullet, that, when lubed and gas checked, weighs 277 grains
from my mold. It is a close copy of the Lyman 358009 bullet, a long time favorite of .35 shooters. The lighter bullet,
designated 225, comes out of my mold, and ready to shoot, at 237 grains. This bullet has also shown great accuracy,
and is most likely the bullet weight the average hunter may want to try.
...
I have two good hunting loads for the heavy bullet. The first is with 41 grains of WC 852(F) military surplus powder.
This is near the burn rate of IMR 4895. I use a bit of shot buffer for a filler, to give 100% capacity. All of my bullets
are lubed with Felix’ World Famous Bullet Lube. These average 2077 fps. and will group at under an inch.
My other heavy bullet load is 43.5 gr. IMR 4895. I also use a bit of shot buffer in this load. Average speed is 2195 fps,
and this one stays in a 2.25” group. So, you can see by comparing the burn rates, these powders are indeed pretty close
in performance.

Use these at your own risk...not sure of the source.
