Included is a pic of a 45 auto cartridge I picked up at one of the local ranges. It appears to be a powder coated bullet or something very similar. It is a medium gray finish that is hard but scratchable with a thumbnail and pressure applied. In the photo it is visible where I scratched it. I'm not entirely up to date with factory ammo as I use so very little of it. Are the ammo companies looking at powder coating? This cartridge would appear that they are definitely doing something along this line.

Are you certain it is factory loaded? Or is it someone else's reload?

Bet it is a reload

It is a Speer cartridge. 99.9% sure it is a factory loaded round. There is not a mark on the case to indicate a reload.

Looks like Winchester has brought back the Black Talon coating.

Says it's a "Lubalox" coating to reduce barrel fouling and engraving forces. Wonder what "Lubalox" actually is.

Lubalox is an oxide coating.
Black Talon is probably the best known version.

If it is scratch-able with you finger......I sure do not want any! That is highly inferior quality in my PC coating testing. PAINT will scrape off like that.

But........those suckers that buy factory loads deserve only the best?!?!?!?

Herters is old, so I doubt it was Herters.

The Herters name is being recycled and put on Russian made ammo... I've seen it at one of the Big Stores... Cabella's perhaps...

Herter's ammo is currently being produced.

Makes the $27 for 100 WWB seem like a deal. But even that is over priced by at least $7.

Lubalox has been used by Winchester for a long time- although I don't know if they ever said exactly what it is. It definitely isn't PC. Some sort of oxide coating I guess.

I sort of suspect it's as much for looks as anything. Their high end bullets like the Black Talons and Fail Safes (both gone now) used it, but I can't say I ever felt that standard factory JHP or rifle bullets needed it.

I think we need a play list: Western>>bought by____________in #### for folks like me who do not know the convoluted history of ammunition manufacturing. Any one willing to contribute to this doctoral thesis? We can call it a "PbD" if you want.

WCC predates Olin Industries, which owns all of the Winchester lines, along with other chemical products.

Western purchased Winchester in 1931. Olin made them Winchester-Western in 1935, and in 1944 they all became Olin Industries.

It's a SPEER cartridge. Leave Winchester out of it.
