Hey all I have a 1985 Marlin in 45-70 that I would really rather have a straight stock on. I know I have to change trigger guard plate and the lever, but I'm having a hard time figuring out interchangeable parts-what other models I can use parts from??? Great site & Any help is much appreciated!

It's a fairly easy and straight forward conversion. I went the other way with my 1895GS and made it a pistol grip. You'll need a new straight stock, and straight lower lever group. Drop the lever and lower tang group, replace with the pistol grip lower tang group and put on the new pistol grip stock. The lower tang group will need to be from an 1895 but the butt stock can be from a 336 or 1895. The only thing to watch for on the stock is if it's built for a gun with the safety or not.

Hope this helps.

Here is a photo of my conversion.

Nice rifle there! Thanks for the tutorial, that sounds fairly simple provided I can find the parts and stock for a decent price. No chance you have your old parts is there?

I went to a straight stock on my Marlin as said above it is fairly simple. It took me a while to find a trade on parts. I looked into just buying the parts without much luck but you might try Wild West Guns. FB

.

The conversion from a PG stock to a straight-stocked Marlin is fairly straightforward - remove the buttstock & disassemle the lower tang from the receiver.

The distance from the inside of the upper tang to the upper surface of the PG tang is exactly the same as in a straight-grip Marlin - the only difference is that the PG's lower tang is thicker to accommodate the wooden PG.

The only other difference between the rifles is that the PG lever is curved to match the PG.

Grind/file/polish the curved outer surface of the lower tang to a straight profile; then likewise rasp/file/sand the PG off the PG buttstock & refinish it.

Then either forge the curved lever to a straight profile, or swap for/but a straight lever.

Done.

Anyone that either can't, or doesn't want to, do the work can just swap in any M336/M1895 straight lower tang (the factory won't sell one) and matching buttstock & lever.

My take offs are long gone. However the parts are available. I got some of mine from Western Gun Parts. http://www.westerngunparts.com/ They're in Canada but ship to the U.S. They advertise on Gunbroker and a quick look shows all the parts you're looking for. Lower tang group (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=390723425)
1895 stock (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=390533892)

Good luck.
