i was loading up some 38 specials for my dad with the j-words to keep in his home protection gun. but all the Remington brass i had was really soft and had no neck tension. After it was flared you could push the bullet all the way into the case. i had hornady xtps 140 grain and they were the right size. all the brass is range pick up but all sized by me and every other brand of brass was ok and had appropriate neck tension. anyone else had this problem?

Remington brass always seems looser to me to.

Last remington brass I had, was fe a box of factory 270 ammo someone gave me, and it was garbage. Some of it was so brittle you could break it i to pieces after hitting it with a hammer. When hmered on it would crack instead of squish.

When I started loading .45acp years ago, I realized the same thing with R-P commercial brass. It seems to be generally thinner, but you can use that to your advantage if you load larger than normal cast bullets; they will easily seat in the thinner brass without being as likely to shave lead when seating the bullet.

I wonder if the previous owner of the brass had annealed it. I have not had any problems like that with Remington, just pierced primers on factory loads.

Traditionally, Remington's .45 ACP brass was so much thinner than all other standard brands, including military, that I wouldn't try to load it. It was not possible to get necessary neck tension to keep from deep seating when the bullet struck the barrel ramp when chambering the next round.

Call the folks at Lee Precision and have them ship you a "u" (undersize) die in .38/357. I never have seen them catalogued but the customer service folks will know what you mean.

This is going to sound crazy, buy if you resize that .38 R-P brass in a 9mm sizer, it will work with your bullets.

I have had various issues with R-P brass over the last few years. It has mostly been QC, and when I have to toss 5-10% of brand new brass I get a bit hot. I have had it way to short(~.25"), cracked necks, visible flaws in the brass, and a couple of missing flash holes. I found all that in my last 2 100 ct orders of R-P rifle brass(.30 Rem and .25-06). I have never had an issue like it with other brands or Remington's factory loaded brass.

Not crazy sounding at all since 9mm is nominally .002 smaller than .38. Good suggestion- maybe only size the top half or so of the case as in neck sizing?
