Lead alloy mix for 500 S&W question

I am going to give the Lee 440 grain mould a try and was wondering if I was shooting a bullet that weight at 1000 to 1100 fps would "wheel weights" be a hard enough alloy? The bullets would also be gas checked.

(My normal process for gas checked 44 magnun is.
1 ingot of linotype + 2 ingots of wheel weights or 1/3 to 2/3 ratio)

Also just how fast could a 440 grain gas checked hard alloy be shot?

TIA

Duke, Check out this site for alloy recipes. I found it very handy. A lot of good reading about cast bullets in this site.

I've shot water cooled WW's to 1,600+ fps. with no problems. 1,000 to 1,100 fps with wheelweights is no problem at all. Air cooled would probably be fine at that speed. The lube is more important.

What lube would you suggest using dubber?

Take the previous advice; Use WWs and water drop and you'll be fine, you may even get by without water dropping them if you want softer for hunting. Your gun has to be the judge. Pass a few around to your costomers and see if WWs water dropped/quenced works,i'll bet it does. It will save you the cost of expensive alloys for hardening.

Using a gas check, straight ACWW will do just fine.

I'm shooting the Lee boolits that fast and using Carnuba Red lube . .seems to work really well. FWIW. (using straight WW's with a little bit of tin added)

Alot of people like the Carnuba Red, I have a bunch, but haven't tested it much, the price is very good as well. I have had excellent results with Lymans Super Moly, and I use LBT's Blue Soft for most stuff. There are a ton of good lubes, including many great home recipes. For 1,000 fps. loads in a .50 cal. I wouldn't think you needed anything too exotic. Lubes can affect accuracy some what, so try a few. I would tend to steer you towards softer lubes. If it's hard and looks like a crayon, thats usually all it's good for. Have fun,:drinks:
