Anyone have a good load recipe for 300 blackout using 160 gr. lee .312 mould sized to .309 with gas check and powder coated. I'd like one using h4198 or imr 4198 as I have quite a bit of each.

Hi,

Hodgdon doesn't list these two powders for the 300 AAC with bullets lighter than 180g. They provide data for H110, W298, lil gun and I4227 with a 150g J-bullet. If you are loading for a AR platform the 4198 powders and a 150g might not cycle your gun. I know that H110 will cycle an AR blackout just fine with a 150g projectile.

The problem being finding 4198 is easy finding those other powders not so way just trying to find someone who has tried 4198 with lighter projectiles.

so are you looking to find super or sub load's? the super 's should be easier to work up cause the 4198 is near the reloader 7.......on the comparison chart......slower than the h110/lil' gun /1680/4227/re7 loads that have showed up on the 300blk board.....I think I'd try browsing there before putting anything together though.

Super's please want to push the 160 cast as fast as possible and still maintain good accuracy

Gleaning over the Hodgdon load data. I see they list H4198 under a 180gr SP with 16.9C grains. The C designating a compressed load. C.U.P. is only at 29,200. Thus it looks like H4198 runs out of room before you get high pressure. That 180 gain bullet would be taking up some powder space so you’d get more behind a 160gr cast. You’ll get less of your IMR in there because it’s longer stick. 4198 is a tad faster than Rel 7. But longer stick.

I would not personally be afraid to place a max 180 grain J bullet load under a 160 gain cast boolit. But it's up to you. H4198 ignites fine at lower pressures. I use it in 223 cast boolit loads at 14.5gr under a little 60 grain 22 bullet.

I shoot that boolit (Lee 312-160) with 16 grains of Reloader 7, FWIW.

What kind of velocity are you getting?

Haven't chronoed, but I will estimate 1600-1700. Cycles and locks back.

Imr or hodgdon 4198 will cycle mine 100% of the time with 17 grains at 168 gr cast powder coated but its a compressed load...... haven't had time to chrono or check for accuracy, but it's minute of coffee can at 100 yrds
