I've been reading here for a while, and keep running across the term '..ranch dog..' in reference to boolits. I gather that they were developed by one of the members on the site, but, what is their significance? I've looked at a few of the designs, and to my uneducated eye, they are just another boolit. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks. mikey

http://ranchdogoutdoors.com/ Here is a link to his website. I have three of his molds and really like them. My new favorite is the TLC311-165-RF .

Well they are just another bullet its just that he custom designed them most had bigger meplats and were based on certain firearms mostly marlin leverguns they were cut by lee but inspected by Ranchdog some he modified like mine that is half plain base and half gas check He now moved on to other things NOE cuts his designs LEE is bringing some into catalog and Carolina cast sells the bullets

Have two of his designed molds - both from Lee. One for the .380 and one for the .38-55. Quality is outstanding, even if Lee did make them and one of the few 'semi-custom' molds you can (could have) gotten in an aluminum six banger. They are tumble lube design but shoot fine (actually they are excellent) when I run them through the 450 or 4500 for size and lube.

Well, I guess you can say they are just another bullet designed by a guy with the handle "Ranch Dog". But, I believe he designed them as accurate, effective hunting rounds basically for lever guns (Marlin). I only have 2 of his molds and they produce a 265 grain and a 240 grain Round Nose Flat Point bullet that is very accurate in each .44 Magnum I have shot them in (I have 5, .44 Mags.). My introduction to Ranch Dog molds/bullets was from researching a bullet for my oversize barreled Puma .44 Magnum. All the other molds I have would only go up to .4315" or so, with my alloy, which is smaller than what I wanted. I was sent to his website and I "talked" to him and he recommended his 265 gr bullet and a sizer at about .432"+ a bit (actually my fiddling brought the sizer to .433"). He even gave me a bunch of load data that I still use today. I purchased the mold from Michael, and the bullets dropped at .433" all day with a few going to .434" depending on temperature. The design lends itself to tumble lubing or as Ranch Dog suggests, dip lubing, and I dip lube mine in 45-45-10. I have had absolutely no complaints about Ranch Dog's bullet molds and bullet designs, I just wish I had a couple more in 30 and 357 calibers...

His 75 grain .314" is a real shooter in all my .32 acp auto handguns ( even though 2 of them would take a smaller boolit) A few others have an over size bore. All cycle very well with that boolit design even though it is a far cry from the traditional Round Nose. His boolits hit hard.

Okay. thanks for the info. Everyone who had talked about them seemed to like them a lot. That seems to answer my question. Thanks! :-D

I own two of his moulds. Both are 460 diameter for the 45 cal. rifles. One is 350 gr. and the other is 420 gr. They are large meplat and gas checked. I lube them in a .460 die in my lubesizer and they are great in a Marlin Guide Rifle and in a friend's Buffalo Classic Handi Rifle.

I was lucky and bought a few additional molds before he closed shop. I am a Marlin gatherer and even though I dislike TL designs his molds just plain work in the Marlin platform. My favorites are the 165gn in 30-30 and the 265gn in the 444M. I will be using the 444M this weekend on white tail again and hope that my freezers will be full. I have taken 2 Nilgai and 2 WT bucks in the past month with the 444M and prefer this rifle/boolit combination over any other.
