From poking around I found mention that strings of lead sticking up into the barrel coming from the leading edge of the groove is from a mismatch with my alloy and my speed right? Either harden the bullet or slow it down? I'm shooting 403 from a 401 bore so I don't think it would be sizing issues.

These are tumble lubed with bw/2cyl

I'd change the lube first. Try something proven like LLA as per the directions.

Thanks Larry. That has been on the block due to inaccuracy issues too, however I had the same phenomena happen with missouri cast bullets as well, but I figured they were sized to 401 so a bit under size.

I had posted under another thread about inaccuracy with tumble lubing this mixture, I used some vht in the same round just subbing the bullets and it was much more accurate just now, so yeah, this lube application is a no-go apparently. Oh well back to the fun of experimenting, thank you.

My S&W 4046 ( 40 S&W) did this forever when I was using Commercial hard cast. I recently switched to commercial "Cowboy alloy" ( only because I don't have a .40 cal mould to mold my own ) @about bhn 11 with 45/45/10 Tumble lube and it all stopped and groups tightened dramaticly

OK. I had this problem in a pair of Beretta M96s made more than a year apart. The throats were reamed poorly. It looked like the reamer had a bunch of runout. This resulted in a step for 1/4 to 1/3 the circumference of the throat and that was shaving lead. The shavings got blown down the bore and subsequent rounds pressed the shavings into the grooves. They didn't bond well, so after a few rounds, the strings partially peeled off the barrel steel.

It's an easy thing to check for.
