We were shooting the Ruger 77/357 and a Ruger 77/22K yesterday when we decided to shoot into a block of lead. First (Left) was the 360-180 gr boolit in the 357mag, the second shot (right) was with the 22 K Hornet using a 47gr boolit both shot at 50 yards. The 357 is loaded at 1550 fps and the 22 K Hornet 2550 fps. Both the same alloy. Almost identical depth and width from both rounds.

That's very cool. But only the surface. Wound channel rules.

Oh no, not just the surface. They both penetrated slightly over an inch in the lead block. The 357 round almost cam out the other side. Boolit still almost intact. No sign of the little hornet boolit, just a very smooth crater bottom.

What alloy? Just curious.....1000fps difference

I wonder what the picture would have looked like with the alloy optimized to each of the cartridges used?

Would a higher BHN for the hornet have shown in the target?.........Dave

cool. I don't have much to add, but I want you to know this is interesting.

http://www.reloadammo.com/footpound2.htm Using this Foot Pounds of Energy Calculations the 357 was at 960 ft.lbs of energy and the 22 k-hornet was at 678.6. Not sure what that means but those are very interesting pictures.I've never killed anything bigger than a groundhog with the hornet but it's one of my favorite calibers. I have hunted deer with the 357 and have had good results. Thanks for sharing with us.

I misspoke the alloy for the hornet was COWW and the 357 was 2 parts Pure to 1 Part WW.
