View Full Version : Chilled shot for casting?

I happened upon a stash of #2 chilled magnum shot, about 110# of it. I am wondering how it will work for cast pistol bullets? The only #2 shot I use is steel so this will definitely go in the pot. Thanks

Dave find somebody and trade the shot for lead or cash. I can't buy shot cheaper than $40 a bag wholesale

What would #2 lead shot be good for? I figure it is from before lead was banned for waterfowl, the Olin bags look to be old as dirt. I will ask around though, before I decide to dump it in the pot, I have a couple hundred pounds of wheel weights as well, but the price of those are climbing at a scary rate.

It would be my thought that it would best make rifle boolits being harder than necessary in my opinion for handgun.

#2 is great for Turkey and Coyotes!

That being said if you take it to a gun shop at $15 a pound they will hump your leg.

I liked 1 1/8 oz of #2s for upland birds over dogs. It would blow right through the bird, but not enough pellets to mess up the bird for cookin.

Magnum shot has more Antimony and Arsenic in it. That's what makes it able to be tempered and harder than just plain Lead or even wheel weights.

As far as shot goes- its darned expensive too.

I got a few hundred pounds of it years ago at the scrap yard.
Now that its so hard to find, I realize how precious it is.
Mix about 25% or so of it with plain Lead or even wheel weights and it will cast like a dream.
Drop the bullets in water out of the mold and it will self temper.
The bullets will be hard and do fine up around 1300 fps. or so --without a gas check.

Use about 75% hard shot and wheel weights and you can get the bullets up a little over 2,000 fps using a gas check with good accuracy, and almost no leading problems.
That's the mix I use for making 'full pressure' .357Mags, .30-30s, .44 Mags.,
and .308s/.30-06s up to .30-30 speeds.

I would find someone who would trade you two or three pounds of scrap lead say WW's for a pound of shot. Around here shot is $50 a bag or $2 a pound so scrap lead at 25 to 35 cents a pound is a bargin in the trade, you can get lead ingots off ebay for around $1 a pound including shipping.

It would be sad to melt that down with the price of shot I am sure some shotgunner who hunts turkeys or coyotes would love to have that on a trade or a decent price.

Since WW became impossible to find around here, I took to using shot as my base material for pistols. 1 lb of #8 shot + 6" of 95/5 lead free solder makes me a nice pistol bullet at around 12-13BNH.

Shot formulas vary wildly. I was using locally produced shot of unknown formulation. Pretty much all shot is of unknown formulation these days. Manufacturers are now using terms like "hardness equivalent of 5% Antimony"

The price of shot by me went from $15/bag a year ago to $35/bag 2 months ago & my supplier said that he was about to have another price hike the last time I bought it.

Wow, thanks folks. I don't hunt turkey, so I never even gave that a thought, and for coyotes I have a .50 cal Hawken, a 32-20, 357 mag, or my 22-250, but I reckon a shotgun would work nicely as well. I will keep it out of the pot for now. Thanks again.

#2 lead would be great burglar shot, too!

Ricochet...Amen!....my favorite for the "house" M870. A socially acceptable shot size that's almost as effective as buckshot on bad guys and there's more of them. Some shyster lawyer can't stand up in court and say, "Your honor, that was premeditated...he was using buckshot".

I'm lucky to have two boxes of vintage Super-X plastic #2s ratholed for that purpose./beagle

Magnum shot and wheel weights aren't much different in alloy, Both in the 5-6% range for antimony, and about 1/2% tin. BTW an ideal alloy for heat treating. Shot is probly much purer, with fewer craps included. Shot is also getting to be worth its weight in money.

Heck I'll do some trading for #2 shot for WWs ingots or raw + lino. Just PM me....I'm also looking for 71/2 shot-like everyone else is

Thanks for all of the replies. Doesn't seem to be much of a market for shot around here, but I will put it on the for sale board at the range.
