View Full Version : How well do those 'plain base' gas checks work?

In comparison to conventional checks?

I'm thinking about casting for my 30-30. I could get a PB mold, a GC mold, or have one cut with some of each cavity type, but the simplicity of having one mold of one type and then being able to install checks only when needed is appealing.

If it matters the rifle is a 336 micro groove with a .309 to .310 bore (depends on where you measure the slug) and I'm looking at an accurate 31-170c mold.

I have some plain-based GCs in aluminum for .38/.357. It takes some juice to apply them, running the slugs backwards through a Lee push through sizer. You need a strong press on a very stable bench. They do work well–they're completely melded with the slug once applied.
